So I've read a few diaries regarding the falling unemployment rate. It is good news I guess, but I can't say I give a damn about those numbers. They don't address anything about those jobs that were supposedly created.
I think the real issue that needs to be addressed when it comes to jobs is wages, hours, benefits and retention of workers. Sure, more jobs might have been added for x amount of months, but that won't mean a damn thing if the wages, hours and benefits of those jobs are so shitty that the workers aren't doing any better than if they were unemployed.
Even if some of those jobs are decent paying jobs, they probably won't last long because they're likely in unsustainable industries, e.g. fracking or mountain top removal, both of which poison the hell out of our environment but most people don't give a fuck about that.
Worse still is that the oil barons still want to lay claim in the arctic and fuck that area six ways from Sunday too like they're trying to do with Keystone XL. The rest of those jobs are probably in service jobs and likely pay jack shit if at all.
And if you're disabled...hah. The only job you could ever hope for is bagging someone else's groceries or flipping burgers because the services we can get almost never lead to decent jobs. I dare you to name one that does, because I sure can't find one. The people who place for those jobs tell us to be open minded because there's no way we'll ever get the job we want. And if you live in a Red State (And you can't move), you're no doubt double-fucked because the vindictive governments and the morons who vote for them will work to kick you while you're down.
So until I hear anything about wages, retention, benefits and so on, take your god damned jobs numbers and shove them straight up your ass. They'd make better toilet paper anyway because that's all they're really good for.
And if you really want things to get better, advocate for unionization. They really are the only defense workers have against abuse, needless layoffs without due process and everything else we've seen happen to workers over the last few years alone.
Maybe humor will help make this clearer. In any case, our economy can't survive on nothing but 'scab wages'.
See you around,
Homer
