Received this e-mail today from Senator Tom Udall (D. NM):
New Mexico is home to some of our country’s most beautiful natural treasures -- not least among them are the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks, which surrounds Las Cruces in Doña Ana County.
And for years, I’ve worked in conjunction with local officials and businesses, environmental groups, and federal agencies to help protect and preserve this distinctive land.
Now, I’m calling on Washington to do the same. Add your voice to mine and tell Washington to act to protect the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

Making sure that we preserve this unique and delicate landscape with its wide array of rare plants and animals and numerous archaeological sites is not only good for our environment, it’s good for our economy, too.
In addition to safeguarding this area’s natural value, it would also boost Doña Ana County’s spot on the recreation map for tourists in the United States and across the world, creating jobs and providing around $7.4 million in new economic activity for New Mexico each year.
Preserving the Organ Mountains is good for the environment, for our economy, and it’s what the people of New Mexico want.
Sign your name to the petition and tell Washington that we need to take action to protect the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

Thank you for all your support and for working to protect our unique and wonderful state.
Tom
