I was reading the letter Wildstein's attorney Zegas sent to the NY-NJ Port Authority.
http://www.nytimes.com/...
Ostensibly it's about reimbursement of legal fees for Wildstein.
It's being reported as "Christie knew!".
But the sweater that may be unraveling here is not Christie's political career (he has been aptly described as "a dead man waddling"). It's the endemic corruption at NY-NJ Port Authority.
In the letter, Zegas mentions Wildstein and his boss Bill Baroni (Christie's then top operational guy at the PA - $290,000 salary) being briefed for four days by a Port Authority attorney in preparation for testimony to the NJ legislature. Apparently Wildstein thought that attorney was going to represent him. In the end, however, Wildstein hired Zegas and took the 5th (offering to tell all for immunity).
Baroni, however, testified (not under oath) at very great length about the fantasy "traffic study". Indeed, he wouldn't shut up about it.
What Zegas appears to be implying is that the PA attorney advised both Wildstein and Baroni to testify falsely (the "traffic study"), but only Baroni did so. Got that? The legal advice of the attorney for the Port Authority to their top officers was to lie!
This indicates corruption at the highest levels of the Port Authority that is both stunning and much more dangerous than anything else revealed so far. It's starting to look like an episode of The Sopranos.
Aficionados will also recall that it was a study grant from the Port Authority that was initially used to push the Rockefeller land deal in Hoboken. When that didn't work, they sent in the Lt. Governor to threaten the mayor. The Rockefeller people were represented by PA Chairman David Samson's law firm. He, of course, was appointed to the PA by Christie.
The Port Authority is to NY-NJ grifters what the NY County Courthouse was to Boss Tweed.
Here's a good article explaining how that corruption happens.
How patronage politics ate the Port Authority

DAMNING UPDATE:
It seems that the vast bureaucracy of the Port Authority takes years to set up and do studies on things like traffic flow, etc. In other words, since the "traffic study" Baroni cited was not part of such Port Authority planning, it therefore makes NO sense on its own terms other than as a sort of ad hoc made-up cover-up excuse.
Let us all now review 18 U.S. Code Section 1001 on what happens to people who make false statements to, oh, I don't know, FBI agents? US Attorneys?
