Another day of spring in North Florida.
Here's what I found walking around the 4 acres this morning. The sun was out but still chilly for us at 40º. At the top of the hill I found this Flatwoods Plum (Prunus umbellata) in bloom. While I was putting this bucket together I looked back to my 2013 photo folder and saw that these trees bloomed Jan 30-31, a few weeks earlier.
More photos below the fold…
It's also called a Hog Plum. The other native plum in North Florida is Chickasaw Plum but that has real thorns; Hog Plums have sharp pointy stems.
Also taking advantage of the spring sunshine is this large Fire Ant nest up against this dead Water Oak. I am resisting the urge to give it a good poke; there are many more to chose from tho. As long as they stay out of the house, I'll put up with them.
I'm not all native plants and flowers all the time. I grow lots of herbs - well I buy one and clone it by cuttings or from seed. Rosemary has been blooming for a few weeks. On a freezing night like tonight (28 in Tallahassee) I'll move this potted plant to shelter.
The rosemary around the garden is on its own. Bunch of cold-weather seedlings are up in the garden but they should be OK. Still have a few more houseplants to shuffle around from the cold. I'll be outside playing - later
And The Daily Bucket is now open for your thoughts and observations...
