A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

What music conquers you?
Am thinking it is damn cold in there.
Okay. It isn't a word. And no, I'm not referring to having relations with an heroic woman in a brass bra. That's a different diary for a different day. Besides, that's too recent even for me to diary about.
Not talking about trying to take down a frustrated painter.
I'm talking about letting yourself be hypnotized into either action or inaction by music. I've long realized can be moved to tears or moved to action by music. I went through my last two years as a teen (diaried someplace on DKOS) without drugs, alcohol or even social interactions to guide my thoughts and actions. That was self-imposed.
Whenever I needed to bolster my confidence or steel myself against overwhelming odds (like applying for a job) I'd listen to Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries. That would always supply the requisite fearless/reckless mood. If I was over excited (heh) I'd listen to the overture from Wagner's Tannhauser. That would always supply the requisite calm and contemplative mood.
My mother aged 15 or so
standing up for strikers
Decades later, and I still use both pieces to galvanize myself into either action or inaction when needed. Alcohol and drugs I don't use so much (as in
almost never), but I'm on the side of those who do so recreationally.
Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries I inherited from my mom. She recounted to me several times how as an adolescent she was transfixed by a performance of it at the Hollywood Bowl. So yeah, when I hear Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries I don't think about Americans obliterating Vietnamese villages or Nazis obliterating everything, I think about my mom at a too young age standing up to both uniformed police and hired thugs at factory gates. I think about everyone who ever did.
That moves me.
So the question is... what moves you?
Does music do it for you or do you use a different...
ahem... method?

Three Star Kossacks & Nashville KosKats Meet-up
by marykk ♥ for Three Star Kossacks
The Three Star Kossacks and the Nashville KosKats met Saturday, March 8th for dinner and then a show afterward to welcome Sandy on Signal to town. About 15 people attended. The organizer marykk said it was the most well attended and succesful event yet for her Kossacks. State Senate Candidate Mary Mancini attended as well as a representative from Planned Parenthood due to an upcoming amendment to the state Constitution which would allow more restrictive abortion legislation.
Here's a couple of photos:
