The Congressional Progressive Caucus just introduced a new budget for the upcoming fiscal year called the Better Off Budget.
No, House Speaker Boehner would never allow this budget, or any of its provisions, to come up for a vote. No, the traditional media won’t report on this budget proposal (although they inexplicably obsess about Republican Congressman Paul Ryan budgets that would never pass a Democratic-led Senate or be signed by a Democratic President). So, why read it?
First, it’s a pleasure to read. So many of the ideas that we progressives dream about getting implemented are packed into this substantial document. Second, it’s a great candidate evaluation tool for House and Senate candidates running in Democratic primaries. “Do you support the Better Off Budget proposed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus?” “What components do you disagree with and why?” Finally, it establishes a wonderful platform for progressives to fight for, not just in the next election, but in elections to come.
So, pour yourself a glass of your favorite drink, sit back, and enjoy the Better Off Budget [PDF].
