The New York Times is reporting that General Sisi has announced his plans to run for President of Egypt, in an election scheduled for July 3, 2014.
CAIRO — Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi, the defense minister and military officer who led last summer’s takeover of the elected government in Egypt, formally announced on Wednesday that he is resigning from the army and running for president, taking a critical step in his consolidation of power.
While it is widely expected that Sisi will win this summer's election, recent
comments by other top Egyptian military officials suggests some dissension in the ranks. Whatever the outcome, two things appear certain. First, that Sisi intends to win this July. And second, when Sisi does, he's looking to avoid a fate similar to that of his predecessor - Sisi's recent reshuffling of the military brass is evidence of just that.
