Yes It's Cesar Chavez Day Today
Unofficially anyway. On Tuesday, March 4 the Tucson City Council proclaimed Cesar Chavez Day a paid holiday for City employees. The new holiday will be observed on the Monday nearest March 31 starting in 2015. There was a march Saturday celebrating the holiday and the release of a new movie about the celebrated labor leader and Arizona native. There is some controversy about the new film. Some reviewers complain that the movie glosses over Chavez's opposition to illegal immigration. Chavez represented farm workers and objected to growers using undocumented labor to break strikes. Tom Prezelski's take on the controversy can be found here ☛ Blog for Arizona Here are Los Tigres del Norte:

A Tucson man pulled a monster catfish out of Patagonia Lake last week. He was jigging for bass on March 24 when he caught the Flathead Catfish which weighed 56.2 pounds. ☛ Arizona Daily Star According to Arizona Game and Fish the state record Flathead was caught at Bartlett Lake and weighed 76 lb. 8.64 oz. Also in the Star, the National Republican Congressional Committee has chosen two Arizona Republicans as members of their "Young Guns" program. They are Andy Tobin in CD-1 and Martha McSally in our own CD-2. It looks like they intend to pour money into these two races. ☛ Arizona Daily Star The New York Times has a story on the 9 Republican candidates in the Arizona Governor's race. They include my pick, Baja's own Cap'n Al Melvin who claims that the Tea Party “saved the United States as a country in 2010.” ☛ New York Times The Grijalva campaign opened their 2014 headquarters on Saturday. The new Grijalva HQ is located at 309 E. 7th St. That's 7th St. and 5th Ave. in the building that used to house Borderlands Trading Company, coolest location ever. Finally, it seems there was some trouble down on University Blvd. after the Wildcats loss to Wisconsin Saturday night. Tucson police arrested 15 people, 9 of them UofA students. ☛ Arizona Daily Star. Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky is a helluva' player but I think the 'Cats would have won the championship easily had they not lost froward Brandon Ashley to injury.
OK, that's all I got. The Picnic is April 5. There will be grilled Bratwursts and something good for the vegetarians. Bring something if you can, I'll bring a German Potato Salad. It's an Open Thread, how's everybody doin' ?
