Spoiler, the land with no chairs is America.
My daughter crashed her bike on the lawn of the Baptist College in Riverside some years ago. I remember security rushing up on a golf cart. His first words were along the lines of "You can't sit here".
Not any concern over her injuries or damage.
Just.
GET OFF MY LAWN!
And that is the limit of America's compassion for the homeless, get out of my sight and don't touch what is mine.
In what may be the most telling when it comes to the state of homelessness in America, when the officer was asked about why the ticket was being given to the homeless man, “So, because people who have homes, don’t want to see people that don’t have homes..”...
...Many people, including the government and obviously the officer in this video, think that if you can’t see the problem of homelessness then it doesn’t exist. The sad fact is that many people are on tough times, including veterans, those with mental illness, children, victims of domestic abuse and the working poor simply cannot afford to live off the streets and are being treated as criminals because of it.

That is actually a title of a fiction piece I'm dithering with regarding the conditons the homeless must face.
But it applies equally to this post as well.
A post on the lengths the US goes to in order to criminalze not being wealthy enough to have a home.
There is a video in the link above where an officer is ticketing and berating someone for sitting on the sidewalk.
Where else are the homeless supposed to go?
The countryside?
Xx
Well that isn't safe.
How about a more public place for the homeless to stay?
That won't work either.
Perhaps if the homeless banded together and set up their own community?
The sad fact of the matter is if you are homeless there is no place for you to go. You are considered a stranger and interloper in the very town you were born and raised in if you are without shelter or the means to get it.
And as icing on the cake simple things like sitting down are criminal acts if you are poor. Never mind your feet are swollen bloody wounds because there is no place to get adequate rest. One must not disturb the housed.
