The situation at Cliven Bundy's ranch may be coming to a boil again. In the past few weeks, several residents have reported some disturbing activities by the militiamen who have flocked to Bundy's ranch near Bunkerville in northern Clark County. Freshman Democrat Steven Horsford was concerned enough about these reports to write a "what the hell is going on here?" letter to Clark County sheriff Doug Gillespie.
Horsford, whose congressional district includes Bunkerville, wrote that his constituents are concerned about Bundy supporters carrying weapons near local churches, schools and elsewhere.
Militia members flocked to Nevada to support Bundy in his fight with the government over his refusal to pay fees for his cattle to graze on federal land.
“I urge you to investigate these reports and to work with local leaders to ensure that their concerns are addressed in a manner that allows the community to move forward without incident,” Horsford wrote to Gillespie.
The letter, viewable
here, details numerous complaints that have been called into Horsford's office in the last few weeks. Residents say the militiamen have maintained a constant presence along highways, even setting up checkpoints where residents are required to prove they live in the area before being allowed to pass through.
This is unacceptable, plain and simple. No one in this country should be made to feel like they're living in an armed camp. The obvious question here--does Bundy know about this? If he does, perhaps Gillespie ought to give him a not-so-gentle push to tell his supporters to stop this nonsense.
