Mount Pleasant, SC- Please drop by one of these
Thursday, May 29th. meetingson your way home to encourage the town to make public transit part of the town's comprehensive plan, including better bus stops, bus pull offs where appropriate and improved pedestrian access to transit stops. We'll have a written proposal for amendments to the plan, that you can sign and file as a show of support if you like. Of course you can give the town your own input in several forms if you like. One simple option is to find ideas you like, print the relevant material out and bring it to the meeting to file, with your name, address and phone number on it.
It's important to understand that the Town of Mount Pleasant is working to make transit work. Total transit ridership East of the Cooper has tripled since the CARTA restart in 2005. The town has built stops and supported outreach and educational efforts. Ridership is up sharply in the past year, 19.9% on the 40 route, 35% on the 41 route. However, the competition for time, attention and resources is very intense. It's unreasonable to expect improvements to happen unless Town officials hear from people who want them. If all they hear from are people screaming for more lanes and highways, that is all they're going to work on. The Park West Meeting can be reached on the #40 bus line.
William Hamilton (843) 870-5299 will be at the Park West meeting. Ann Owens will attend the meeting at the Waterworks as representatives of the Hungryneck Straphangers. Ask us for a copy of our official recommendations if you want them. We'll post a copy here before the meeting. We'll be working it up over the weekend. If you have ideas you wish to include, just email them to William Hamilton.
Millions of dollars and thousands of hours have been invested in the Town of Mount Pleasant's comprehensive plan over the past two decades. It's important to understand what it is and what it already says to be an effective advocate. You can learn about the plan on the Town's website.
