A while back, K1 and I were in the mall and went into the pet store. We are fiercely against puppy mills and pet store puppies, and both our dogs were adopted from shelters. But we went in to see the dogs there because we were in dire need of a cute animal break. Who knew the days of AKC-recognized breeds were over? Follow me below the orange pet gate after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
The overwhelming majority of puppies there were so-called hybrid or boutique dogs. All with names trying to suggest that it's a "real" breed. All with price tags to match "real breed" status.
I'm old. We used different language back in my day to describe puppies arising from the mating of two purebred dogs. What was that word again? Oh yeah... mutt. And mutts didn't cost $700; no, mutts were free because your neighbor down the street's dog got out when she was in heat, and had puppies. Or they were the cost of adoption at the shelter, costs well paid to rescue a dog in need of a home.
Shelter adoption was how we acquired the Casa's first dog- my namesake, Brillig. Brillig was an absolutely adorable pup, whose mother was a "small doberman" and whose father was very clearly a black Labrador Retriever. All four pups in the litter had different qualtities from each side but you could tell they were all related. Ringo left the cage at the shelter and Brillig was carried shaking into the car, and for the next 13 years we couldn't have asked for a better dog.
Because Brillig was part-Doberman, our town and homeowner's insurance people were informed on his registration that we'd adopted a lovely Labrador Mix, but we all knew what he really was. He was a Dobrador. We didn't know that his mongrel pedigree actually made him a high-end designer doggie, though!
Here's a few of the mutts Designer Dogs K1 and I saw that day:
- Beabull - Beagle x Bulldog
- Lhasapoo - Lhasa Apso x Poodle
- Yoranian - Yorkshire Terrier x Pomeranian
- Schnoodle - Schnauzer x Poodle
- Dorkie - Dachshund x Yorkshire Terrier
- Chiranian - Chihuahua x Pomeranian
We got laughing over one cross we didn't see, but know exists. The real name is not
nearly as interesting... we think the Shitzpoo is far better!
What sort of interesting mixed-breed names have you come across? Or in what could be more fun... what breed named can you imagine? Have at it, my creative TC family!
Fun fact: I learned today (sorry for stealing your comment, JustOneMore Dad) that for the first time since 1884, mixed-breed dogs were allowed to compete in the 2014 Westminster Kennel Club Show. It's not possible to judge mixed breeds against a Breed Standard, obviously, so they're not eligible to compete in Best of Show. "All-American dogs" are permitted in the Agility Trials, and a Husky mix named Roo! took 2014 Best All-American Dog.
Best in Top Comments Award for tonight goes to BeninSC, my agile formatting wizard!!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
A couple of comment flags:
Flagged by TomP and smoothnmellow, this comment by blueyescryinintherain consists of nothing more than a screenshot of a Kaili Joy Gray tweet. And more than worthwhile even so!
Flagged by Gottlieb, this comment by JJustin dazzles in its brevity, considering what it communicates!
From The Marti:
This one, from mudslide in this morning's C&J had me laughing out loud at the description of the goings-on at a seniors home on Father's Day.....makes me thing DK should eventually open our own ''Home For Wayward Senior Citizens and Unrepentant Activists''.
From Yours Truly, brillig:
G2geek is full of win all throughout the comments in Marcus Tullius' Open Carry incidents at my place of employment. The cops got involved.. First, for his soon-to-be-a-diary novel idea and then for this comment on why service & retail workers need higher wages.
From Laura Clawson's North Carolina Senate candidate wishes there were more 'traditional'—aka 'white'—people comes the new ethnic group: Traditional People. terrypinder started a lovely thread in which raptavio and RhodeIslandAspie, among others, came to play.
