Democrats in Southwestern Pennsylvania seem to think that the 30 days that have passed since our pro-marriage equality ruling has erased all of the discrimination and bigotry. Allegheny County (home of Pittsburgh) has informed employees relying on domestic partner benefits that they will have to marry by July 31, 2014 or lose benefits. Never mind that we are the only marriage equality state without statewide non-discrimination protection. So if your partner/spouse works in a neighboring County, they could be fired. Or you can remain unmarried and lose benefits. Our petition is here.
We are asking this - all PA municipal employers maintain the status quo on domestic partner benefits until the Commonwealth extends non-discrimination protections to all of us. Seem like fair compromise? We need your signature!
Also, in light of the fact that people think this is a "special benefit" I put together a list of Ten Actually Fabulous Special Benefits for LGBTQ Public Employees.
Note, my partner is an employee of Pittsburgh so I do have a personal stake in this in that I would like to not lose my health insurance or be married because her boss told her so. Thanks!
