Now that
"Hobby Lobby" has become a household word,
which can be understood as meaning:
"SCOTUS says an employing company's personhood includes the right for its religious views to determine whether its employees' health insurance will cover birth control"
...while one advocate of this employer religious exemption and power, and of Affordable Care Act repeal, and vigorous opponent of Medicaid expansion, is 18-year Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins, who is being challenged by super-Progressive civil-libertarian blue-collar ACLU veteran Shenna Bellows (for whom contributions today are being matched as detailed in
this diary),
...perhaps Maine voters will wonder about the implications of Collins' recent marriage to a long-time Washington insider whose profile begs for the
nickname "Lobby Hubby",
...and about what her new husband's profile implies about whether Collins is still sufficiently rooted in Maine (in contrast to her challenger Bellows, whose
TV ad posted here emphasizes "I'll never forget my roots").
The Collins campaign must think this matters, because it has taken the trouble to encourage compliant journalists to report that Collins' new husband
"is not a registered lobbyist"
which relies heavily not only on the word "registered", but also on
the meaning of "is",
and should certainly reassure any Maine voters who prefer their Senator to avoid excessive intimacy with lobbyists.
