Religious freedom is not a monolithic thing. So SCOTUS stood with Christian businesses against contraception. So be it. Frankly, did we expect anything else? At least, it was close.
Now on the same day comes word of a remarkable interview Sir Elton John gave to Sky News of England (yes, I know it's part of the Murdoch "Death Star" empire). That makes this all the more remarkable. The subject was religion with Elton speculating on WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) if he were alive today. In it, he declares that the Catholic Church needs to allow priests to marry and that priestly celibacy as an idea is a dead duck-my words, not his.
At the risk of being sacrilegious, Amen, Sir Elton.
I have long believed that such a policy change would go a long way toward solving the problem of child abuse in the Catholic faith. Sir Elton goes to heap great praise on Pope Francis with which I heartily concur.
Although I am not a Catholic myself, one of my best friends is. Notice the words "best friends". We get along just fine and tolerate and respect each other's views. That's the main basis of Elton's praise for the Pope. His examples of inclusiveness and tolerance toward all, no matter their faith or lifestyle, should be followed by all.
Go to Sky News' website and check out the interview. It's food for thought and the soul.
