If today is an average day, 277 Americans will be shot by a gun. And 84 of those shot will die.
What follows are reports on just a few of those shootings.
Saco, Maine – A 33-year-old man used a shotgun to fatally shoot his 35-year-old wife, 12-year-old stepson, 7-year-old son, and 4-year-old daughter before using the weapon to kill himself late Saturday night.
San Carlos Park, Fla. -- A 36-year-old man shot and killed a 29-year-old woman – his live-in companion – and her three daughters, ages 10, 6,and 2, before using the gun to kill himself Sunday morning. The 10-year-old girl was his step-daughter, the 6-year-old and 2-year-old girls were his daughters.
Wichita, Kan. – A 3-year-old boy died after he accidentally shot himself with a handgun he found inside a cabinet above a refrigerator about 6 p.m. Tuesday. The child’s mother and her boyfriend were taking a nap at the time of the shooting.
Chubbuck, Idaho – A 5-year-old girl was accidentally shot and killed by another 5-year-old child at a home about 3 p.m. Wednesday. Adults were in another room when the gun discharged.
Alton, Mo. – An 18-year-old man died last Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the head while handling a handgun in his apartment with several friends. The victim recently obtained the weapon and said it was not functioning properly.
Brooksville, Fla. – A 25-year-old woman who was five months pregnant has died after she was accidentally shot at a home last Saturday when a man was showing her and several friends some of the guns he owns and one of the weapons, a handgun, accidentally discharged. Efforts to save the unborn child were unsuccessful.
Carmel, Ind. – A 38-year-old man shot and killed his 40-year-old ex-wife before using the gun to kill himself about 8 p.m. Sunday. The two were divorced on July 1. The couple’s two children, ages 10 and 8, and the woman’s parents were in the house when the shots were fired.
Chicago, Ill. – A 60-year-old man walked into a downtown office building and shot and wounded a 54-year-old man – the CEO of the company that employed him – before using the gun to kill himself about 10 p.m. yesterday. The shooter, who was a longtime friend of the victim, was upset because he had recently been demoted when the company was downsized. The CEO was listed in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his head and abdomen.
Erie, Pa. – A 62-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were found fatally shot at an apartment and police are calling the incident a murder-suicide. Two children were asleep in the apartment at the time of the shooting.
Lacey, Wash. – A 51-year-old husband and his 39-year-old wife were found fatally shot in a car about 2 p.m. Wednesday and police are calling the incident a murder-suicide. They leave behind two teenage children.
Arlington, Tex. – A 50-year-old man chased a 46-year-old woman outside a beauty salon and then shot and kill her before using the weapon to kill himself about 2 p.m. Saturday. Authorities said there was a domestic relationship between the two.
Henrico, Va. – A 22-year-old man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant about 11:15 p.m. last Sunday. Police are looking for two men spotted running from the scene.
Daytona Beach, Fla. – When a man from Georgia accidentally fired his handgun while in a hotel room last Thursday morning, the flying bullet went through a wall and struck a 12-year-old boy from Kentucky staying in an adjacent room with his mother, father, and younger brother. The victim suffered a bruise in his side from the bullet. No word yet on whether or not charges would be filed.
San Antonio, Tex. – When two friends – both 12-year-old boys – found a handgun while walking down a street about 1 a.m. last Wednesday, one of them accidentally fired the weapon and the bullet struck the other boy in his foot. No word on the victim’s condition.
Jacksonville, Fla. – A man in his late 20s accidentally shot himself in the stomach Thursday morning. He was listed as having life-threatening injuries.
Prince George County, Va. – A 45-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the shoulder when a gun he had placed under his pillow inadvertently discharged about 9 p.m. last Thursday. No one else was struck. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. His injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
Colorado Springs, Colo. – A 53-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the foot about 11 a.m. Friday. No one else was struck. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. No word on his condition.
Rochester, Minn. – A 77-year-old man accidentally shot his index finger when he fired a handgun while at a gun range about 11 a.m. last Wednesday. His 15-year-old grandson, who was shooting with him, was not injured.
Bonneville County, Idaho – About 4 p.m. last Wednesday, witnesses reported hearing a whizzing sound before noticing bullet holes in two windows of a minivan parked in a lot. Police believe they were stray bullets fired from some distance – perhaps up to two miles away. They don’t think the shots were intentionally directed at the parking lot. They are looking for the shooter.

Bedford, Ky. -- A 48-year-old man shot and killed the 16-year-old niece of his 33-year-old former girlfriend and shot and wounded the ex-girlfriend before using the gun to kill himself. Two juveniles were in the home when the shooting occurred and they are now with other family members. The ex-girlfriend was expected to survive.
Tulsa, Okla. -- A 17-year-old male shot and killed his 50-year-old mother before using the gun to kill himself about 4 p.m. Monday. Police said the shooting was planned by both victims.
Hudson, Fla. -- Police went to a home Monday night to find two real estate agents fatally shot -- a woman and her live-in boyfriend -- and authorities believe the woman shot the man before using the gun to kill herself.
Riverside, Calif. -- A man went to a home and shot and killed his 43-year-old estranged wife and also shot and wounded another person before leaving the house and later using the weapon to kill himself on Saturday.
Bicknell, Ind. -- A 33-year-old man was shot and killed by a man after the two argued outside a home about 2 a.m. yesterday and the shooter later shot and killed himself as he was pursued by police.
Tucson, Ariz. --- When two groups -- each with three or four men -- got into a running gun battle in the parking lot of a motel about 9 a.m. yesterday, one of the shooters suffered a fatal gunshot wound. No arrests have yet been made.
Columbus, Ohio -- A 2-year-old boy was shot in the leg when an unknown male assailant walked up to a 22-year-old man at a family gathering and opened fire about 8:30 p.m. yesterday. The 22-year-old was struck in his foot. Police do not yet have a suspect. No word on the conditions of the victims.
Loveland, Ohio -- An 11-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the arm while cleaning a gun at a home with a family member. It was not yet known if the girl or a family member was cleaning the gun when it fired. Police removed about seven guns from the home and will hold them during the investigation. Her injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Birmingham, Ala. -- A young boy accidentally shot himself in the hand with a handgun after he found the weapon in an alley on Monday. No word on his condition.
Cincinnati, Ohio -- A 17-year-old girl was outside with two friends when a juvenile gunman opened fire on one or both of the friends and the girl was shot and wounded. She was not the intended target. The shooter fled the scene. The victim was expected to recover from her injuries.
Seattle, Wash. -- A 19-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the foot. No one else was struck by the flying bullet. No word yet on whether or not charges would be filed. The victim was listed in stable condition.
Northport, Ala. -- A 23-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg while showing his father’s handgun to a friend about 10 p.m. Saturday. His injuries were listed as non-life-threatening.
Orange, Tex. -- A 37-year-old man with a concealed handgun permit accidentally shot himself in his leg while inside a convenience store about 4:15 p.m. Friday when he pulled up his shorts causing the weapon to discharge. No one else was struck. No charges were expected to be filed. No word on his condition.
Albuquerque, N.M. -- Someone was shot multiple times about 3 a.m. today. No word on the victim’s condition.
Jacksonville, Fla. -- A man was shot in his leg at an apartment complex about 10 p.m. Friday. His injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
Tampa Bay, Fla. -- A sheriff’s deputy was working an off-duty job at a race track when he accidentally discharged his gun while in a bathroom at the track on Friday. The weapon fired as he was removing it from his belt. No one was struck. No word on whether or not any charges would be filed.
Miami, Fla. -- An 83-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after a road-rage incident resulted in him shooting twice at another vehicle with a handgun Friday afternoon. No one was struck although one of the bullets went through the driver’s side window of the vehicle.
Yorkville, Ill. -- A 30-year-old man was cleaning a handgun at his apartment about 3:15 p.m. last week when the weapon accidentally discharged and sent a bullet through the floor and into the unit below. No one was injured. Damage to the property was estimated at $5,000. The man was charged with disorderly conduct

Spring, Tex. -- A 33-year-old man went to the home of a relative late Wednesday afternoon and shot and killed six people, including four children, and shot and wounded another child. The dead included a 39-year-old man, his 33-year-old wife, and their children -- a 14-year-old boy, a 9-year-old girl, a 7-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old boy. Another child, a 15-year-old girl, suffered a gunshot wound to her head. The shooter was arrested. The wounded girl has been released from the hospital.
Ellettsville, Ind. -- When emergency crews arrived at a burning home about 8:40 a.m. Thursday, they discovered inside that a 46-year-old mother had shot and killed her 15-year-old son before using the gun to kill herself.
Carbon County, Pa. -- A 44-year-old man shot and killed a 44-year-old woman before using the gun to kill himself yesterday in the home they shared.
Tucson, Ariz. -- An adult daughter returned home about 10 a.m. Thursday to find both of her parents, who were in their 50s, shot dead and authorities are calling the incident a murder-suicide. It was not yet known if the mother or father did the shooting.
New Castle, Pa. -- When a 60-year-old man went to bed late last Friday after having earlier argued with his 29-year-old stepson, the stepson went to the older man’s bedroom and shot him four times as he slept, killing him; then after going downstairs and pointing the gun at his mother, the younger man used the weapon to kill himself.
Lake Hopatcong, N.J. -- Police went to a home about 1:10 a.m. last Sunday to find that a 45-year-old man used a shotgun to shoot his 47-year-old wife multiple times, killing her, before using the weapon to kill himself.
Spokane, Wash. -- A 37-year-old man went to a hospital lab where his wife was employed and shot and killed her before using the gun to kill himself Tuesday. They leave behind two children under ten years of age.
Akron, Ohio -- An 87-year-old husband shot and killed his 78-year-old wife before turning the gun on himself in a failed suicide attempt. Family members said the shooting might be the result of an early onset of a mental illness. He was expected to survive.
Miami, Fla. -- A 67-year-old man, a local pastor, was shot and killed during a robbery outside a market about 6 p.m. Thursday. Two male suspects, ages 20 and 19, have been charged with first-degree murder.
Greensboro, N.C. -- A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times and killed and his 22-year-old brother was shot and wounded in the parking lot at an apartment complex about 3:45 a.m. Friday. Witnesses saw someone leave the scene on foot after the shooting. Police believe the victim’s knew the shooter.
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- A 44-year-old man was fatally shot after he was involved in an argument outside a bar about 1:45 a.m. today.
Clayton County, Ga. -- A 23-year-old man was handling a gun about 6:45 p.m. last Saturday when the weapon accidentally discharged, killing a 23-year-old acquaintance who was nearby.
Clovis, N.M. -- A 33-year-old man was shot and killed inside a vacant home Friday evening after he got into an argument with another man.
Miramar, Fla. -- A 3-year-old girl accidentally shot herself at a home Wednesday night after she found an unsecured gun. The child was listed in stable condition. The state attorney’s office is looking into whether or not charges against any adult would be filed.
Lincoln, Neb. -- A 12-year-old girl was at a fourth of July house-party last Friday night with about twelve other people when she was accidentally shot after a handgun discharged as it fell from the pants pocket of a 42-year-old man who was nearby. The bullet stuck the girl in the middle of her back before exiting through her shoulder. Police cited the man for unlawful discharge of a firearm. The girl was expected to survive.
Wilkesboro, N.C. -- A man and his wife were walking into a pet-supply store about 7:20 p.m. Friday when a gunshot rang out and the flying bullet ricocheted off the side of the building and truck the man in his shoulder. Police think it was an accidental discharge by someone. The man was treated at a hospital and released.
New Waverly, Tex. -- A 14-year-old boy was sighting his rifle outside his home Wednesday afternoon when one of the bullets he fired either passed through his target or ricocheted and traveled through the woods before striking and wounding a 45-year-old man who was walking on his nearby property. Police called the incident an accident and said no charges would be filed. The victim was expected to make a full recovery.
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. -- After a woman punched a man in the face when the two ended their romantic relationship, the man left the woman’s residence but returned later with his two sisters and a gun and, after an altercation of some sort, the woman’s mother was shot about 10 p.m. Friday. It was not yet clear who did the shooting. The victim’s injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Darlington County, S.C. -- After doing some backyard target shooting with her family Monday afternoon, a 69-year-old woman was accidentally shot in her arm by a female relative as the family-member cleared her handgun that was thought to be unloaded. No one else was struck. No word on whether or not charges would be filed.
West Covina, Calif. -- A man accidentally shot his 28-year-old son-in-law in the wrist while showing him a handgun about 4:40 p.m. Friday. No one else was struck. No word on whether or not charges would be filed.
Lakewood, Colo. -- A man accidentally shot himself in the leg after shooting his neighbor’s dog during a dispute about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. The dog was expected to survive. The man was arrested. No word on the man’s condition but he was able to walk to an ambulance.
Dolan Springs, Ariz. -- After two men, ages 28 and 23, broke into a home about 7 a.m. Wednesday and stole $18, a laptop computer, and a rifle, the 24-year-old wife of the older man accidentally shot herself in the stomach with the stolen gun about 3 hours later as she and her mother were unloading groceries from the family station wagon and the rifle was in the back seat of the vehicle. The two men were booked on charges of burglary and possession of a weapon. The woman was listed in critical condition.
Chico, Calif. -- A 31-year-old man told police that after he became involved in a verbal altercation with another man on a street about 11 a.m. Friday, the man pulled a gun and shot him in the hand -- however, he later admitted the story was a fabrication and he had accidentally shot himself while alone at his house. Police plan to request charges of felon in possession of a firearm and false reporting of a crime. No word on his condition.
Albuquerque, N.M. -- A 35-year-old man allegedly shot his uncle in the forearm after they got into an argument over removing tools from the nephew’s property. The shooter was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence. No word on the uncle’s condition.
Plant City, Fla. -- A 25-year-old man allegedly shot another man at a home about 9 a.m. yesterday and police said the incident was related to a domestic issue. The shooter has been arrested. The victim was in serious condition.

Green Township, Ohio -- A 13-year-old boy is accused of accidentally shooting and killing his friend -- another 13-year-old boy -- at a home with a gun he reportedly stole from his friend’s grandfather. The grandfather had the weapon under a mattress. Police were called to the home about 2:15 p.m. Monday.
Mission Bay, Calif. -- Police went to a Boy Scout camp about 7:30 a.m. Monday to find that a 12-year-old Scout had died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest. Authorities had not yet determined if the shooting was accidental or intentional. Guns are not permitted at Boy Scout events and police say the boy likely brought the weapon to the camp from his hometown of Las Vegas, Nev.
Stanly County, N.C. -- Police went to a home about 8:20 Wednesday to find that a 26-year-old man had shot and killed a 16-year-old girl before using the gun to kill himself. A note left by the man indicated he was upset because the girl’s family didn’t want them together.
Cedar Park, Tex. -- After a 59-year-old man -- a pastor at a local church -- and his son-in-law purchased a handgun at a gun show, they loaded the gun while in their car in the parking lot and, when the son-in-law was handling the weapon, it inadvertently fired and killed the pastor. No one else in the area was struck. The son-in-law has not been charged with any crime.
Lake Charles, La. -- A 53-year-old man carrying a shotgun walked into a church about 8:20 p.m. Friday and shot the pastor twice, killing him, as the pastor was preaching to a congregation of about 65 people that included the victim’s wife.
Windsor Locks, Conn. -- Police went to home about 1:30 p.m. Monday to find two people dead, both in their 40s, and authorities believe a husband shot his wife and then used the gun to kill himself. The couple had children although it was unclear if they were at home at the time of the shooting.
Henrico, Va. -- Police went to home about 6:30 a.m. Sunday to find a husband and a wife fatally shot and authorities have called the incident a murder-suicide. It was not yet known if the husband or wife was the shooter.
Casper, Wyo. -- Police went to an apartment about 7 p.m. Friday to find a man and woman in their 20s fatally shot and authorities suspect it was a murder-suicide. The two were believed to be in a relationship. It was not yet known if the man or woman was the shooter.
Kenosha, Wis. -- A worker found an 80-year-old man and his 78-year-old wife fatally shot in a car at a cemetery about 7 a.m. Saturday and authorities are calling the incident a murder-suicide. The couple left behind suicide notes in the car and at their home. Each victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. One of the victims was reported to have been in poor health. It had not yet been determined if the man or woman was the shooter.
Athens, Ala. -- Police went to a home about 1 p.m. yesterday to find two people fatally shot -- an elderly woman and her adult son -- and authorities are calling the incident a murder-suicide. It was not yet known if the mother or son did the shooting.
Livingston, Calif. -- A 9-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the side of his face by his 14-year-old brother who was handling a shotgun about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday. The victim was alert and talking as emergency crews provided treatment.
Wise County, Tex. -- When four youngsters spotted a snake outside a home about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, two of the children went inside to get a rifle from a gun cabinet and, as they did, the gun accidentally discharged and struck one of the group -- a 14-year-old boy -- in the abdomen. He was airlifted to a hospital and was listed in stable condition after surgery.
Harvard, Ill. -- A 15-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the abdomen by his 12-year-old brother about 11 a.m. Tuesday after the two boys began handling a rifle they found in a home where they were staying while their parents were out of town. The victim was listed in stable condition and undergoing surgery.
North Charleston, S.C. -- A 15-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg. His injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Hale, Mo. -- A woman -- the acting postmaster -- was shot and wounded at the post office about 3:30 p.m. yesterday by a man she knew and he was later found with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The woman was in stable condition. No word on the condition of the gunman.
Escambia County, Fla. -- When a 71-year-old man and his 32-year-old son got into an argument at a home on Tuesday, the son hopped on a riding mower and drove away, whereupon the father gave chase in his pick-up truck and fired two shots, one of them striking the son in his neck. Police said the father might not have intended to shoot the son. The victim’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
Columbus, Ohio -- An off-duty police officer accidentally shot himself in the leg while in his personal vehicle about 5:45 a.m. yesterday. His injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Keene, Tex. -- A 39-year-old man was accidently shot in his chest at his apartment by another 39-year-old man about 10 p.m. Friday. No charges have been filed against the shooter although the case is being forwarded to the office of District Attorney. The victim was flown to a hospital were his injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Nashville, Tenn. -- A man playing with his handgun accidentally shot himself in his arm about 6 a.m. Monday. No one else was struck by the flying bullet. No charges were filed. He was expected to recover.
Masaryktown, Fla. -- A 55-year-old man shot and wounded a 25-year-old man after the two got into an argument about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. The shooter was charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm. The victim’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
Chicago, Ill. -- When two armed men, ages 22 and 18, tried to rob a 32-year-old man in a hallway of an apartment building about 11 p.m. yesterday, the three exchanged gunfire and all were wounded. The 18-year-old was treated at a hospital and then released into police custody. The other two were listed in serious condition.
Chicago, Ill. -- Two men, ages 39 and 34, walked into a hospital with gunshot wounds about 2:30 a.m. today after someone shot at their car. The older man received a graze wound and refused treatment. No word on the condition of the younger man.
Wasilla, Alaska -- After two vehicles on a road passed each other repeatedly about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, one of the cars pulled alongside the other and someone inside opened fire with a handgun on the two people in the adjacent car -- a 52-year-old male driver and his passenger. The car with the shooter then sped off. The undercarriage of the adjacent car was damaged but no one was injured.
Leesburg, Fla. -- A 62-year-old man used a loaded handgun to confront the driver of an early-morning newspaper delivery car because he felt the driver regularly went too fast in his mobile-home park where the posted speed limit is 15 miles per hour. The man was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Virginia Beach, Va. -- A 40-year-old woman shot and killed her 7-year-old daughter Wednesday afternoon before using the gun to kill herself.
Plymouth, Pa. -- Two people -- a 58-year-old woman and her 57-year-old husband -- were found fatally shot in their home on June 15 and authorities are calling the incident a murder-suicide. The woman had two gunshot wounds -- one in the back and one in the head -- and the man had one gunshot wound to his head.
Livingston, Tex. -- About 9:15 a.m. Thursday, an 82-year-old man went to his 78-year-old wife’s nursing home where he then shot and killed her before using the gun to kill himself.
Portland, Ore. -- A man and woman were found fatally shot at an apartment about 5:30 p.m. Friday and authorities are calling the incident a murder-suicide.
Vienna, Ga. -- A 49-year-old man shot and killed his 52-year-old wife at their home late Thursday night before using the gun to kill himself.
Fargo, N.D. -- A 20-year-old man was accidentally shot and killed by a family member around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Note to gun owners: If there is a gun in your home, it is 22 times more likely to be used to kill or injure a member of your family (due to domestic homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting) than to be used in self-defense.
Orondo, Wash. -- A 19-year-old man was accidentally shot and killed by his friend -- another 19-year-old man -- as they partied with others at a campground yesterday morning. Police charged the shooter with manslaughter.
Marietta, Ga. -- A 19-year-old man was accidentally shot and killed by another 19-year-old man, his roommate, Tuesday afternoon. The shooter was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Hoover, Ala. -- When a female called 911 about 12:30 a.m. today to report a physical altercation between her and her husband, police went to the home to discover a 29-year-old pregnant woman was fatally shot and witnesses reported seeing her 29-year-old husband fleeing the residence. Police are looking for the husband.
Gaffney, S.C. -- A 59-year-old woman is dead and her husband says he accidentally shot and killed her when his shotgun inadvertently discharged as he was cleaning it about 8 a.m. last Saturday. Police are still investigating.
Martinsburg, W.Va. -- A 22-year-old woman died after suffering a gunshot wound to her face about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. She was found lying near her vehicle in the driveway of her apartment. A vehicle was seen fleeing the scene after the shooting.
Sulphur Springs, Fla. -- A 38-year-old man was found lying on a sidewalk with a fatal gunshot wound to his upper body about 10:30 a.m. Friday. Police are looking for a suspect in the shooting.
New Orleans, La. -- Nine people were wounded when gunfire erupted on Bourbon Street about 2:45 a.m. today. Police say two young men began shooting at each other on the busy street after they argued. The most seriously injured victim, a woman, was in critical condition.
Cross Roads, Tex. -- An 11-year-old boy was accidentally shot by another child about 1:35 p.m. Thursday. The victim was reported as conscious but no other details were available.
Chicago, Ill. -- A 15-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the foot while standing on a sidewalk about 12:15 a.m. Thursday. No one else was struck. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. He was listed in good condition.
San Diego, Calif. -- A U.S. Border Patrol agent accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his gun at his residence about 7 p.m. Wednesday. No word on his condition.
Bloomsburg, Pa. -- A vendor at a gun show -- a 44-year-old man -- accidentally shot a woman in the leg while showing her a gun and holster. No one else was struck. The vendor thought the gun was unloaded. Authorities had not yet determined if the vendor would be charged. The woman was treated at a local hospital and released.
Washington, Pa. -- A 48-year-old woman accidentally shot herself in the stomach while closing a drawer in an upstairs bedroom at a home about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. The bullet went through the wood drawer before striking her. Two 16-year-old teens downstairs at the time were not injured. Police said they did not expect to file any charges. The victim’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Norfolk, Va. -- When a man inside a residence was unloading his gun about 1:40 p.m. Saturday, the weapon accidentally discharged and the flying bullet struck his hand before hitting another man, a friend, who was sitting nearby. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. The injuries to both victims were described as non-life-threatening.
Chicago, Ill. -- A 47-year-old woman on her way to work was grazed in the leg while riding a city bus about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday after another passenger noticed a gun about 3-in. long lying on an empty seat and, thinking it was a toy or cigarette lighter, picked up the weapon and it discharged. The flying bullet struck a vent near the floor and a fragment struck the woman, although it did not penetrate her clothes.

Stafford, Tex. -- Police responding to a 911 call about 2 p.m. Tuesday found three members of a family fatally shot -- a 23-year-old man, his 18-year-old brother, and his 15-year-old sister -- and authorities are calling the shootings a double-murder and suicide. Authorities have not yet determined who fired the gun.
Carrizo Springs, Tex. -- A 46-year-old man, a reserve police officer, shot and killed his 13-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son before using the gun to kill himself at their home on Thursday. The mother of the two children was at work when the shootings took place.
Pawtucket, R.I. -- A 43-year-old man tracked down his ex-girlfriend to an apartment where he broke through a window there and fired several shots, killing the resident, a 45-year-old man, before using the gun to kill himself about 10 p.m. Monday. The woman was able to flee the apartment when shots first rang out.
Frazeysburg, Ohio -- An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed by his friend, another 11-year-old boy, after the two found a handgun at the friend’s house last Tuesday afternoon.
Riverdale, Ga. -- An 18-year-old male was accidentally shot in the chest and killed when he and two other teens were playing with a gun about 9:30 p.m. yesterday.
Salisbury N.C. -- A 22-year-old man was charged with involuntary manslaughter after he accidentally shot and killed his 23-year-old cousin with a sawed-off shotgun while drunk about 11 p.m. Monday.
Benton, Mo. -- A male high school student was accidentally shot in the head and killed in his school parking lot Monday night. The victim and three friends just finished playing basketball and he was shot after they got into a truck and one of the friends tried to pass him a gun owned by the grandfather of one of the teens.
Appleton, Wis. -- A 55-year-old man was accidentally shot and killed at a residence about 7:30 p.m. Sunday when an acquaintance was examining a gun and it inadvertently discharged. No one else was injured although several other people were at the residence at the time of the shooting. No word on whether or not charges would be filed against the acquaintance.
Lithia Springs, Ga. -- A 48-year-old man had just arrived for work about 7 a.m. Sunday when he was shot at least three times and killed by a 41-year-old woman he had been dating for about 18 months. The woman left the scene and was later found dead in her vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her chest.
Eros, La. -- When a child called 911 early Saturday morning to report a shooting, police went to the residence and found that a 50-year-old man had shot and killed his 32-year-old girlfriend before shooting and killing himself. The child who made the call was one of the woman’s three children who lived at the house. The children are now with relatives.
Milpitas, Calif. -- A man and woman were found fatally shot at a park about 1 p.m. Friday and police suspect it was a murder-suicide.
Westfield, N.Y. -- A 38-year-old man fatally shot his 29-year-old girlfriend in the head before leaving the scene and using the gun to kill himself at a beach Thursday morning.
Akron, Ohio -- Police have issued an arrest warrant for a 27-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a fellow motorist, an 18-year-old male, during an alleged road rage encounter early Saturday morning.
Buffalo, N.Y. -- A 30-year-old man was shot and killed outside his home and two women, ages 40 and 28, were shot and wounded about 4 a.m. Sunday. The older woman was in serious condition; the younger woman was in fair condition.
Buffalo, N.Y. -- A 38-year-old man was shot and killed while on a street about 1 p.m. Friday.
Montgomery, Ala. -- A 27-year-old man was found fatally shot on a street early yesterday morning. No arrest has yet been made.
Phoenix, Ariz. -- A man accidentally shot himself in the leg while shopping at a big-box department store last Saturday. No one else was struck by the flying bullet. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. The victim’s injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Camden, N.J. -- A county prosecutor’s office detective accidentally shot himself in the leg in an office bathroom Friday. He underwent surgery and was expected to make a full recovery.

Petersburg, Va. -- A 35-year-old man shot and killed his 2-year-old son, 9-year-old step-daughter, and 30-year-old wife before using the weapon to kill himself about 10 p.m. Sunday.
Rowlett, Tex. -- When a 35-year-old man didn’t show up at his son’s ballgame, police went to the man’s home about 1:30 p.m. Sunday to find that he and his 30-year-old ex-girlfriend had been fatally shot and authorities are calling the incident a murder-suicide. It was not yet clear if the man or woman did the shooting. Each of the victims had two children.
Gaithersburg, Md. -- Police responding to a parking garage about 11:20 p.m. Sunday found a 38-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound and a 39-year-old woman nearby armed with a handgun which she then used to shoot herself. Both died after they were transported to a hospital. Police say they believe that the two were married, but might have been separated.
Canon City, Co. -- Police went to a home about 11:30 p.m. Thursday to discover that a 56-year-old retired police officer had shot and killed his 49-year-old wife -- a police department dispatcher -- before using the gun to kill himself.
Irvington, Ala. -- Police who went to a home about 9:30 a.m. Saturday found a husband and wife fatally shot and lying between two cars in the driveway and authorities believe the man shot the woman before using the gun to kill himself.
Smithfield, Pa. -- On Saturday, a 29-year-old man shot and killed the 19-year-old woman he was dating before using the gun to kill himself.
Columbia, S.C. -- Police went to a parking lot about 6 a.m. Friday where they found two people fatally shot -- a 25-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman -- and authorities are calling the incident a murder-suicide. The woman suffered two gunshot wounds to her body; the man had a single gunshot wound to his head.
Salisbury, N.C. -- A 22-year-old man was at his home last Monday when he accidentally shot and killed his 23-year-old cousin while showing him a shotgun and it inadvertently discharged.
Volusia County, Fla. -- A 40-year-old woman accidentally shot herself Sunday afternoon while putting a handgun into a holster during a marksmanship competition at a gun and hunt club. No word on her condition.
Liberty County, Tex. -- A 48-year-old man was driving with his 44-year-old wife and two young children on Friday when he accidentally shot himself in his upper leg while attempting to “jack” a round out of a handgun. No one else was struck by the flying bullet. No charges were expected to be filed. He was in stable condition while awaiting surgery.
Cleveland, Ohio -- Two men were in a car about 7 p.m. Sunday when one of them -- a concealed carry permit holder -- accidentally discharged his gun and the flying bullet struck his hand and also struck the other man in his leg. The gun was confiscated by police. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. No word on the conditions of the two men.
Macon, Ga. -- A man accidently shot himself in the groin about 9:30 p.m. Thursday when he tried to holster his handgun while parked at a gas station and the weapon accidentally fired. No one else was struck. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. No word on his condition.
Oklahoma City, Ok. -- An intoxicated 26-year-old man accidentally shot himself Friday while unloading his gun. No one else was struck. He was arrested on one count of carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. No word on his condition.
Orlando, Fla. -- A 70-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the foot when a handgun fell from his waistband in the parking lot of a grocery store about 12:30 p.m. Friday. He told police the gun-holster had broken so he stuck the gun in the waistband so the weapon would be concealed. No one else was struck by the bullet, however it ricocheted into a nearby unoccupied car causing about $500 damage. No word on whether or not charges would be filed.
Montoursville, Pa. -- A 24-year-old man was shot in the side of his head while at a birthday party at a home about 2 a.m. Sunday when a 24-year-old man -- the resident of the home -- was showing him a handgun and the weapon accidentally discharged. Both men had been drinking alcoholic beverages. No one else was struck. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. No word on his condition.
Harris County, Tex. -- A man accidentally shot himself in the chest about 1 a.m. Sunday. He was sitting in the back of a pickup truck with three other men when he took out a gun and pointed it at his own chest and the weapon inadvertently discharged. No word on whether or not charges would be filed. He was listed in stable condition.
Wilmington, N.C. -- A man accidentally shot a friend in the arm with a rifle inside a home Saturday night. No one else was struck. He was charged with discharging a firearm within city limits. The victim was expected to be okay.
Mobile, Ala. -- A teenage boy was shot about 6:15 p.m. Sunday. He was listed in critical condition.
Macon, Ga. -- An 18 year-old man was shot in the back at about 5 a.m. Tuesday. He was listed in stable condition with injuries considered non-life-threatening.
Albuquerque, N.M. -- A person was shot multiple times at a motel about 2:30 a.m. today. The victim was listed in critical condition.
Columbus, Ind. -- A 20-year-old man was shot in the neck about 9 p.m. Monday. A suspect was in custody. No word on the victim’s condition.
Memphis, Tenn. -- A 16-year-old was shot by someone on Monday. Police do not yet have a suspect. The victim was in critical condition.
