A little late, but I caught a glimpse of CNN while I was working and I've been all night waiting to type this.
A CNN talking head (I don't know which one, and, really, who cares) stated that naming the officer that shot Brown would "set a bad precedent", forcing authorities to reveal the names of officers whose victims were shot for legitimate reasons.
I'm calling bullshit. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
Leaving aside the idea that maybe there ARE no legitimate reasons for shooting a perp other that "I was pinned down by automatic fire, his friends were coming, and a school bus had just turned the corner . . ."
Leaving aside the idea that legitimate shootings and illegitimate shootings are somehow the same in the eyes of the law, the public, and the media, and cannot be separated,. . .
Leaving aside the question of why would we need the naming of this particular officer to set a precedent at all . . .
What's wrong with having the public know the names of officers who shoot people, rightly or wrongly? THEY'RE OUR AGENTS! They work for US! We should have the right to monitor their work, evaluate their efficiency, and remove any who don't shape up.
Maybe the actions that have resulted in them fearing for their lives if their identities are revealed, are actions they should not be taking.
Has anyone on CNN considered that?
