It's not complicated. The media's now-routine use of Straw Man, Non Sequitur, Ad Hominem and Tu Quoque have been trotted out again like old toy soldiers. Below the orange squiggle are facts and an opinion.
1. The judge who authorized Perry's special prosecutor examined the evidence the Travis County DA had for the two charges and found the sufficiency standard had been met.
2. That judge, Bert Richardson, is a conservative Republican and was appointed to the bench by GHW Bush.
3. The man Richardson appointed to act as special prosecutor, Mike McCrum, is a former Federal Prosecutor and policeman.
4. McCrum is from San Antonio/Bexar County. He is NOT from the Austin/Travis County area.
5. Perry's threat to veto funding for the Public Integrity Unit unless the Travis County DA resigned (coercion a public servant) was repeated publicly and it made national news.
6. The threat was carried out. Perry vetoed the budget line-item for the Public Integrity Unit.
Perry does not dispute the facts of the case. He's bragged about them. No one disputes the governor's power to veto and these indictments don't charge Perry for doing so. They charge him with an abuse of official capacity and coercion of a public servant.
Think of it this way. Perry has a constitutional right to carry a gun but he doesn't have the right to discharge it into the back of a ten year old
