While many have had their lives affected by the increased police presence in Ferguson and the riots surrounding the area, one certain person has a deeply poignant story.
Following Governor Jay Nixon's orders to deploy the national guard, one peaceful march was started protesting the order. Inevitably, police were sent to crack down on this. KMOV at St. Louis reports:
Eight arrests were made around 4:30. All of the suspects were arrested for failure to disperse. One of the people arrested was Hedy Epstein, a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor, who is now a political activist.
Beyond being a Holocaust survivor, Hedy Epstein is a miraculous woman. While Mrs. Epstein may have been among the group of Holocaust survivors campaigning for Palestinian rights, Mrs. Epstein has been doing so as early as 2001,
as the founder of the St. Louis division of an anti-war group in Israel called Woman in Black.
As for how she's treating her arrest, Mrs. Epstein has been quoted as saying:
I've been doing this since I was a teenager. I didn't think I would have to do it when I was ninety. We need to stand up today so that people won't have to do this when they're ninety.
You're a strong woman, Mrs. Epstein, certainly stronger than the elements within the police force and the government that have exacerbated Ferguson to this point and you will be in our prayers.
