Alan Cowell of the New York Times reports on a break story writing that, Syrian Rebels Seize[s} (sic) Crossing Point With Golan Heights. Although later in the article we learn IS fighters may be joined by western back Syrian rebel forces.
LONDON — After a lengthy campaign culminating in fierce clashes, Islamist opposition fighters in Syria, including members of an Al Qaeda affiliate, took control of the Quneitra crossing point on the demarcation line with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, activists said on Wednesday.
The move could bring Islamist forces within 200 yards of territory controlled by Israel; the status of a United Nations force that is supposed to monitor the crossing point was unclear. An activist in the area, contacted by Skype, said a coalition of Islamists, including members of the Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, opened an assault on the crossing early Wednesday.
Israel said one of its soldiers was injured by "errant fire," but it has no interest or intention of getting involved unless militants cross into Israel.
To be clear this crossing point is in Syrian territory and Mr. Amidror a spokesperson for Israel, apparently speaking unofficially said "Israel should not in the conflict and should respond only if attacked or to provide humanitarian assistance to wounded people on the demarcation line."
Mr. Amidror also noted that if this development is evidence that Syrian rebel forces have linked with rebel forces to the north it could indicate the Assad regime may no longer be able to land aircraft in Damascus International airport.
“We should be very clear about our red lines,” he said. “No one will cross the border. If someone will try, we will kill him. And if someone will launch rockets or artillery to Israel, our retaliation will be immediate.”
Cowell also reports over 190,000 Syrians have died so far in the four year civil war.
9:57 AM PT: Here appears to be a rare moment when I catch the New York Times in a spelling error their title.
Their first title when this story broke about 10 minutes ago, was "Qaeda rebels seizes Crossing Point With Golan Heights." leaving out the "al"
Also their own article indicate some of the fighter were western backed rebels.
So they current correction is:"
Syrian Rebels Seizes Crossing Point With Golan Heights
leaving in the singular s at the end of Seizes,
I predict they will correct the seizes to Syrian Rebels Seize Crossing Point.
9:59 AM PT: MIDDLE EAST
Syrian Rebels Seizes Crossing Point With Golan Heights
