The gun control will come when the wealthy realizes that the poor can take away their wealth with guns.
UPDATE:
The only reason I posted this diary is to look at the issue from a different angle. For years, general public has been asking sensible gun controls, proper background checks, after every single tragedy, but every time those actions are being shut down by the lobbyist.
In order to counter balance those lobbyist, there will be a need from wealthy opposing it. Wealth gap is widening. A few percent of the populations accumulating huge wealth is likely to slowly decay the society's trust in the system and when too many people struggles to make the ends meet, when majority of people feel they are not getting their fair share for the work they do, alternative options to resolve the problems via force may become attractive. In the human history, whenever there was a revolution, it came as a result of unjust societies with the wealth concentrated in the hands of few.
What makes capitalism attractive is the as a result of getting rewarded for the work you do and the personal liberties that it comes with. If you don't feel you are getting rewarded for the work you do or treated unjustly, the attraction to capitalism likely to diminish.
Benefits or negatives of the gun ownership aside, the important question is, what kind of a society we would like to become in the future. If everyone remembers, during the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, there were no looting or any kind of crime. People trusted and helped each other. AND, no one had guns...
So, the question really is, do we want to become a society where everyone respects each other without the fear of another person harming them or a society, everyone is a paranoid basket case, watching over their shoulders and buying more ammo every time someone farts...
