Water Experts to explain why Proposition 1 will not solve California’s water problems
LOS ANGELES, CA —Representatives from Food & Water Watch, California Water Impact Network, Southern California Watershed Alliance, and the No on Proposition 1 campaign will hold a teleconference for Southern California media members on the case against the $7.5 billion water bond.
WHAT: Teleconference to brief Southern California press on the case against California Proposition 1
WHEN: Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 10:30 am
WHO: Adam Scow, California director, Food & Water Watch; Carolee Krieger, executive director, California Water Impact Network; Conner Everts, executive director, Southern California Watershed Alliance; Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, No on Prop 1
WHERE: By telephone only: 605-562-3000; Code 893693#
BACKGROUND:
California voters will soon decide on whether to approve or reject Proposition 1, a $7.5 billion bond measure that would fund water infrastructure projects while putting the State in deeper debt. With interest, Proposition 1 would saddle Californians with more than $14 billion of new debt, costing our State’s general fund $360 million a year for 40 years. Prop 1 prioritizes funds to new controversial dam projects that are intended to supply more water for corporate agriculture interests and provides minimal funding to help rebuild Southern California’s crumbling water infrastructure. An emerging coalition opposes Proposition 1 on the grounds that it prioritizes public funds for special interests and does nothing to address the root problems of California’s water crises.
