It's no wonder that I have very little impact as a blogger/writer on the vast expanse of the internet - I just can't wrap my head around the success of "The Fifty Shades of Grey". And it seems as if the whole world is sitting of the edge of their seats, squirming in an attempt to temper that burning itch in their loins, panting with a hint of perspiration over the top lip, all in anticipation for the release of the film.
I just don't get it. Well, that's not exactly true. I get the fact that there are millions of women, American executive women, who still engage in little girl fantasies about "being made, under duress" to experience the pleasures of sexual intercourse. I've read the exhaustive reports about how our puritan and Christian religious roots precludes women, even the liberated feminists who are extremely successful, from engaging in hot, lascivious sexual encounters with their mates or significant others.
Just how screwed up are we as a society? To be brief - it appears that we are very screwed up indeed.
There are religious zealots here in America, both men and women, who fervently believe that sex is a dirty, soulless act performed only by heathens. I guess I really shouldn't be too shocked that some people also believe that it's okay not to vaccinate their children while courting a burgeoning epidemic?
It is impossible for me to contextualize the vast appeal of "The Fifty Shades of Grey" to tens of millions of people. The airwaves have been bombarded with the comical images of what lust and sexual desire looks like. The young ingenue actress appears to be young, like an eight year old, pretending to want to be tied up for some fun, unknown game.
The news is rife with stories of women who are offended by men catcalling them on the streets. The issue of rape is a hot button issue, and yet we have a multimillion dollar selling, poorly written sex tome about sexual subjugation and abuse deemed titillating by women the world over.
Needless to say the book was a sexual turn-off for me and the movie? Well, I won't even attempt to watch it once it leaves movie theaters and turns up for free on the many cable venues! The whole idea of women not being able to express themselves sexually without being forced is just appalling to me. I don't understand how women can demand equality in the workplace, at home, hell being equal to men in all ways, and yet are wholly unable to accept their own sexual needs and desires unless forced.
