In December 2014, the FDA changed the rules and regulations for Gay men who who want to donate blood. In order to donate blood, Gay men must now attest to the fact that they have not had sex with another man for the a period of one year. Prior to this "rule" change, there was a lifetime ban on blood donation for men who have had sex with other men.
Alan Cumming, best-known for his roles in Cabaret and The Good Wife, has become the national spokesperson for "America's Hardest Challenge", an effort to get the FDA to change its discriminatory anti-gay rules. GLAAD ( Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis) have partnered with Cumming to launch a petition campaign to protest the new FDA rule which is considered anti-gay and not based on any scientific fact.
Thus, the "Celibacy Challenge" petition and video have been created. The petition reads " So straight guys can have safe sex with woman after woman and still donate blood. But gay and bi men who have had safe sex for an entire year—even with a monogamous partner—would still be banned. Sounds like discrimination to us."
