Teacher's Comments from Mr. Stewart:
My Students: Remember the magic of science class when you were growing up? Physics opens up a world of wonder and excitement for young minds. While learning important concepts, we get to have fun with the coolest toys in school.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but one thing I try to instill in each of them is the wonder of science. The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.
My Project: With the materials I am requesting, my students will be able to swing a tray with a water glass on it around in a vertical circle without spilling a drop. They will be able to see how reflection and refraction works on our magnetic whiteboards. They will hold a glass container in their hand and boil the liquid inside. They will look into a mirror and see infinity. They will find the resonant spots of tuning forks in a tube and be able to calculate the speed of sound in the room. They will shatter myths about mirrors they have thought to be true for years. They will be able to study refraction of laser light through a giant prism (and make a 2 meter rainbow from it).
Physics can easily be another class about equations and math. On the other hand, it can be a class the students look forward to because of the interesting activities, labs and demos that bring the math connections alive. My students will be able to make connections between the activities and labs with the fundamental concepts behind them with the materials requested for this project. Thank you for your consideration.
