The first Republican Presidential Candidate to announce his 2016 campaign, Ted Cruz, has forgotten at least two things. One was to procure the Tedcruz.com website. But perhaps nearly as important is the teeny constitution issue that he forgot to be born in the United States of America.
Yes, Ted Cruz is a member of the political party that has refused to accept anything from President Barack Obama--even his certified Hawaiian birth certificate. The Republican Party has maintained, at least unofficially which is really more important than officially, that President Obama ain't from around here.
And yet, in announcing his candidacy for president, Ted Cruz forgot to be, in the words of The Boss, "Born in the USA." The Constitution of the United States of America states that anyone running for president must be a "natural-born citizen." Ted Cruz, however, carelessly allowed himself to be born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
So how can the Republican Party and their rabid electorate accept a candidate born on foreign soil? I have heard nary a peep on that particular issue. Certainly the Democratic Party in general has supported immigration reform and might not want to be seen disparaging a candidate based on where he comes from. However, this issue is a constitutional one, and is not anti-immigration.
So has no one said anything about (or should I say aboot?) the Canadian origins of Ted Cruz to avoid another round of Birthcertificategate? Or is the silence on this constitutional issue due to the fact that various media poop-storms have given meaning to so many nothings that nothing has meaning?
Whatever the reason, Ted Cruz's birthplace isn't going to change and it's too late to amend the constitution so that Cruz can run for office in line with the constitutional requirements. But with so much billionaire cash floating around, all that may ultimately matter is which master of the corporate universe manages to spend his paricular candidate into office. All this remains to be seen. Popcorn anyone?
