PeopleforBernie.com is a grassroots organizing place. Many other cities have formed their groups under this umbrella. Today a group of people met through San Jose for Bernie. I was one of the 16, and I wanted to share my impressions of this initial effort.
Surprisingly (or not?) there were people who had never involved themselves in politics in any way, and many just grudgingly voted. A couple had always voted 3rd part their entire lives, but were willingly to vote Sanders in the primary.
We discussed the importance of not being anti-Hillary (SCOTUS, SCOTUS, SCOTUS) but pro-Bernie.
Many refugees from John Edwards campaigns. The majority had voted Obama, but had trouble with drone wars, TPP...and the usual litany of O-disappointments. With the usual litany of O-praise. Obamacare.
I remarked to the group......umm, it seems we are all caucasians here. And said I understood that African-Americans and Latinos suffered the most from the 2008 economic disaster, and that Bernie's fundamental message of economic inequality should resonate with all groups of people, but we needed to think about the dramatic issues that have arisen outside the area of income equality.
The group was boomer and a bit below boomer on the generation scale, but a young woman showed up, after the Berkeley meeting overflowed, and they had to send people away. (I think it was held in someone's backyard) She was the total spitfire, awakened to politics when her mother was upset over Gore's loss. She knew the work that had to be done to awaken her peers "who don't even know who Joe Biden is!"
