The Plains has not been receiving a lot of media coverage, but our spring in Oklahoma and parts of Texas has been an anomaly. We have had rain/tornado warnings/threats for almost non-stop for two weeks.
While the greater metro of Oklahoma City has been mostly spared, areas south i.e. Moore, Norman and other southern Oklahoma towns have been hit hardest.
One of many stories that is not getting much attention is a local animal shelter that was heavily damage by high winds and flooding has gone virtually unnoticed - even in our own "news reports".
This shelter has operated on a donations for the most part and volunteers who cared nothing but keeping the animals safe and finding them home.
Notwithstanding a "board of directors" who is responsible for the well-being of these animals, the sanctuary remains a mess and no visible volunteers attempting to help the animals within.
Thanks to Becky Switzer (yes wife of Barry Switzer) she has started a gofundme site where donations can be made.
The physical structure is still standing but the area is surrounded by flood water, consequently dogs must be kept in their crapped indoor conditions.
My heart goes out to the cats and dogs who continue to live in this site, which from all outside evidence needs immediate help if not evacuation.
I worked at the Sanctuary at one time, but had to leave after the political infighting among the "members" ended up actually hurting the animals. I know I had to adopt two of them to keep them from dying.
Please animals lovers in KoS land, this situation is getting worse because there more rain is predicted for the next 10 days.
To all former Norman residents who once cared and remembered what a great asset Second Chance was to Norman, I implore you to go to the secondchancenorman.org website and there is the link to the donations Becky Switzer is trying to collect. Her goal is 20k, but after looking at the pictures, you will see for yourself much more is needed.
