That guy really knows how to teach English!
Sadly, Key and Peele announced recently that this will be their last season creating the successful and funny
Key & Peele show on Comedy Central. But until that last day comes they will continue to put out quality comedy sketch. For example, the sketch you can watch below the fold imagines a world where teaching is handled with the enthusiasm of a Sport's Center report.
There's footage of a "Teacher's Draft" where the school with the lowest test scores gets the first draft pick. When the principal of the school announces a hot young calculus teacher named Mike Yoast as the first pick of the draft, Peele has this elegant line:
And just like that, you're a millionaire.
Michael Keegan proceeds to wax poetic on the young Calculus star:
Mike Yoast is an unbelievable story. His father, living from paycheck to paycheck as a humble pro football player. His son was a natural mathlete. You know he's going to buy his mom a house!
It's not just obvious jokes like that that make this sketch memorable. They proceed to show highlights of a teacher engaging students in class (cameramen lining the walls of the classroom like a NBA basketball game).
I don't believe in standardized tests as meaningful in any respect whatsoever, but the conceit of these types of educational reformers who want to apply some thinly conceived meritocracy to education are as ludicrous as this sketch shows.
