There is a guy who won a Golden Globe and a Critic's Choice Award as Best Supporting actor and then was nominated for an Oscar in the same category for his role in 'Whipash'. Turns out he's got ties to Missoula and is a Griz alum. His dad was the chair of the UM Music Dept. His name is J.K. Simmons. You know him best as the avuncular and droll spokesface in the State Farm commercials.
This article includes video and mentions his early days in the theatre.
"Just very, very talented. Beautiful singing voice, his musical knowledge is incredible, he's written some incredible music, and this is the part that the world really doesn't know that he has those abilities too, in addition to his acting ability," Bigfork Playhouse owner Jude Thompson recalled.
Simmons graced the stage at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse several times and said after being nominated for an Oscar for his role in Whiplash, "A guy doesn't think about things like this when he starts doing summer theatre in Bigfork, Montana in the 70's. (In fact, I didn't think about this when we shot 'Whiplash,' but here we are).
"He came to work for us that summer to play Tommy Albright in Brigadoon, and then in our company you're in all four shows, so he discovered his character acting ability in the other shows," Thomson told MTN News in an interview.
The property I live on is about 3-4 miles south of Bigfork and my parents and I spent a good share of our summers here when I was a kid. Dad taught High School science and math. We went to many a performance at the Bigfork Summer Playhouse when it was a firetrap waiting to happen. It never came close. The stage was at the front of the building and the entrance to the seats was at the back, thru a single door, 8 feet above the ground. It's hard telling if I ever met the guy, by 1970 I was starting my teen years. The cast made themselves available to the audience after each show for chitchat to help build that community connection.
I don't remember exactly when it was torn down and started over from the ground up. It's a much nicer facility now. It is re-oriented to take advantage of the natural slope to create much better acoustics and sight lines. If you ever come out this way to visit Glacier, etc. make sure to make the BSP a dinner and a play evening. You'll be surprised at the dining options available in that little village.
Speaking of food and Griz alum, vote for these guys' Doritos commercial:
