The big marriage equality news this week came from the SCOTUS. The justices have decided to hear all four cases from the Sixth Circuit. You can read more about this event
here and
here and
here. All three diaries have some interesting discussions and comments.
Towleroad's Ari Ezra Waldman has some great analysis about what we might expect from the Court
here. And, scotusblog has an interesting article about animus and how it relates to the marriage equality cases
here. The New York Times has an article discussing possible reasons that the SCOTUS reworded the questions that it will resolve/answer. You can read that
here.
David Boies expresses confidence in a favorable marriage equality ruling.
We had one major marriage equality ruling this week. A federal district court judge in South Dakota ruled in favor of marriage equality. You can read more about that ruling here. The ruling has been stayed pending appeal, and the state defendants have promised to appeal to the Eighth Circuit.
In Michigan, a federal district court judge ruled that the state must recognize the 300 or so marriages of same-sex couples that occurred prior to the stay being issued there (during the window). You can read more about that ruling here.
A federal judge in Nebraska has denied a same-sex couple's motion to intervene in that marriage equality case. And, the order notes that there is a hearing to consider plaintiffs' motion for preliminary injunction on January 29.
North Carolina lawmakers have asked the SCOTUS to take their marriage equality case. (good luck with that)
In Arkansas, the state Supreme Court has two new members. That being the case, a different panel of judges will be deciding on marriage equality in that state. The Arkansas Times has an article about the complexity of the situation. It might not matter now that the SCOTUS will decide the marriage equality issue.
(indicates hearing on plaintiffs' motion for a preliminary injunction on 1/29/15)
