You don't hear about a case like this everyday. For now.
Two Milwaukee police officers were shot by the same man, both
seriously and permanently injured. They brought a lawsuit against the gun store, which had once been "
ranked as the number one crime gun dealer in America." They sued the gun store for negligence, something law experts said would be a tough case to win.
Late yesterday, a jury disagreed with the experts and awarded Officer Kunisch and Officer Norberga win!
Jurors sided with the officers, ruling that the store was negligent. Jurors ordered the store to pay Norberg $1.5 million, Kunisch $3.6 million and punitive damages of $730,000.
Both the officers know they aren't done yet:
The officers' lawyer, Patrick Dunphy, said Tuesday that he said his clients "feel very relieved," though he anticipates years of appeals.
This is the beginning of holding gun stores accountable for selling to criminals.
Authorities have said more than 500 firearms recovered from crime scenes had been traced back to Badger Guns and Badger Outdoors, making it the "No. 1 crime gun dealer in America," according to a 2005 charging document from an unrelated case.
