This November, residents in Missisippi will vote on a bill, Initiative 42, that would require the State of Mississippi to sufficiently fund public schools through the 12th grade. Initiative 42 will ensure every child in Mississippi has a constitutional right to a properly-funded education.
To thwart this initiative brought forth by the people of Mississippi, some politicians in the Mississippi state legislature created Alternative Bill 42A that would NOT require the state to adequately fund education in Mississippi. With Mississippi being last in education, perhaps the state politicians think educating our children is a lost cause. They will see the full consequences 10 to 20 years from now when these kids cannot get good-paying jobs because they do not have the necessary skills in communication and critical thinking or a degree from a higher institution. The economy will not be able to tolerate an entire generation of 20-somethings who cannot get good jobs, all while companies choose not to do business in Mississippi because of its uneducated workforce.
If this were not bad enough, today, I received the following information:
Mississippi Manufacturers Association, Mississippi Bankers Association, Mississippi Poultry Association, Mississippi Homebuilders Association and Mississippi Realtors Association—those are the $25,000 PAC donors to the Improve Mississippi Political Initiative Committee, formed at the urging of GOP "leadership" in Mississippi to fight Initiative 42, the people's ballot initiative to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.
To think that some of the largest trade organizations in Mississippi do not see the connection between education, jobs, and the economy is shocking. Or it is simply politics as usual with the GOP charlatans carrying out back-room deals to make such a stance lucrative for these associations?
One thing is clear. Mississippians are tired of being last in education. The people brought this initiative to the ballot, and we need help in dispelling the lies being sold by the state legislators, the state GOP, and their Big Money associates. Our children and our teachers deserve better than to allow the short-sighted GOP puppet-masters to pull the strings on our kids' future.
