So what has happened to Conservatism?
Decadence and too much populism: Conservatism traditionally has been, as a philosophy, the idea of preservation of tradition, security, and liberty. Conservatives traditionally put the national interest above the wants of the international community. America grew from the ashes of the Civil War into an industrial power due to a tradition of trade protectionism. It was Conservatives who, at one time, championed the cause of sound money and keeping debt manageable. It was also Conservatives who unified a young nation through a system of public credit. The business of Republicanism was the business of a sound economy, leaving social legislation up to the states.
No Need To Worry, ” Just Keep Voting Republican”…
Robert Montgomerie —
A few months ago, after Hillary Clinton’s announced her intent to run again for President, I felt inspired, after watching respected friends on the left mindlessly begin to swear their undying loyalty, to pen an article that got me temporarily shunned from the few online journals that publish my material: “No Need To Worry, Just Keep Voting Democrat”. That same piece got me in several heated discussions with the same brand loyal folks for levying a critique about a party that, despite its blatant dubious nature and outright contempt for its base, they still fought hard to believe, proving the old illumination of Liberaldom’s once biggest critic, William F Buckley, that, “ Liberals claim to want to give hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover there are other views.”
Before the outright ‘shamfest’ that was the first Democratic Party debate — an affair that gave witness to a nation that the mainstream media is anything but objective, fair, and balanced, there was a second Republican debate. The debate was a comical spectacle of ideas, opinions, and smattering of policy — most of it bad. The GOP, not unlike its geriatric competitor, has become the symbol of a nation in decline, and its cause, loosely defined as Conservatism, has become second rate and maudlin. When did Conservatism become a bawdy, bellicose version of slapstick jingoism as a definition? What assurances could the average red-blooded right-winger have that a world empire could retain its dominance when its predominant discourse was the intellectual equivalent of a Vaudeville act?
