I think the statement speaks for itself and I don't know how much more I can add to the sentiment...
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A federal judge has chosen for now not to force Texas health officials to change their stance in denying birth certificates to immigrant families with U.S- born children, saying that the families raised "grave concerns" but more evidence is needed, according to a ruling issued Friday.
This, apparently, has something to do with the icky-ness of foreign documents:
At issue is the acceptance of identification cards_known as matriculas consulares_issued by Mexican consulates to citizens living and working in the United States. Lawyers for the families contend that prior to 2013 they were able to present these document, as well as foreign passports without U.S. visas in them, and obtain birth certificates in Texas.
Says U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman:
"A birth certificate is a vital and important document," he said. "As such, Texas has a clear interest in protecting access to that document."
I guess this is just another instance of pre-partum-pro-life, with a healthy dose of xenophobia tossed in, to give the cognitive dissonance that Texas flair. No matter that these children won't have access to their rightful healthcare and education -- I imagine that they'll be so much easier to jail without any reason at all, if they can't prove that they legally
exist.
I don't mean to needlessly bash Texas on the basis of one cray-cray asshat of a federal Justice, but according to addictinginfo.org:
Pitman is unfortunately backed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who was recently indicted for felony fraud. Paxton called the ruling “an important first step in ensuring the integrity of birth certificates.”
Nice endorsement of "integrity," Ken.
I'm pretty flabbergasted by this. I bet they think they're "Patriots."
