This week, we’ll explore the next 3 houses of the astrological chart.
Last week, the first three houses were discussed. A brief recap of those houses:
The first house is where we enter into the world; it our coloring of the world. Astrologers look to this house to see what viewpoint of the world a person has. It describes how we start things, whether it’s a new job, a new relationship, a new life or any of the other “firsts” in our lives.
Next is the second house where we begin to individuate. We look to see what differentiates us from others. It is in this house that we find what makes us feel secure and gives us comfort in the material world. And, it shows what innate talents and skills we bring into the world.
The third house shows our interactions with those we are closest to in our early life. These people are often our siblings, other relatives, except our parents, and our childhood peers. This how shows how we think and what influences shape us outside the home.
Follow me below the orange swirl for this week’s discussion of the fourth, fifth and sixth houses.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group gives Kossacks a safe place to check in, a daily diary where we can let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, earthquakes, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It also allows us to find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, earthquakes etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a Kosmail and ask to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
We do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

Probably because our parents (or caretakers) are so important in our early life, the mother and the father are each given their own house. Traditionally, the fourth house was assigned to the mother and the tenth house to the father. Recent advances in astrology, from a humanistic perspective, have made these assignations much more fluid. An astrologer will consult with a client, while looking at the fourth house, to find which house represents which parent. Of course, not every child is brought up in a two parent household and frequently the chart will reflect an absent parent whether that absence is physical or emotional.
For the individual, the fourth house also represents their home. It is where they go to process their experiences in the outside world colored by their viewpoint, their security and talents, their thoughts and their interactions with others. This house will show how one ends things in the outside world in order to withdraw into the home to process.
How one thinks about home is shown here. Is it a refuge? A place to sleep? A gathering place of family? One’s earliest patterns with a parent are shown here. I believe that being aware of those patterns of early life, represented by the signs and planetary energies in the house can give insight into why we act the way we do on a gut level. Cancer and the Moon rule this house of our deepest secrets and our deepest feelings.
A man with Neptune in this house may experience his father as a drug abuser or someone unable to give their son a firm foundation in life by being absent or not following through on their promises. One with Capricorn or Saturn on the fourth could experience home as a cold and lonely place. Someone with Sagittarius or Jupiter in this house may have experienced many moves as a child, even to other countries.
Then we leave the house of home, parent and endings to explore, in the fifth house, what makes us special. Our creativity, children, gambling, hobbies and romance are represented by this house. It is in this house we can see how we push ourselves to become that special snowflake in our parent’s eyes. Whether we compete on the playing field, draw pictures, make things, put on a show, we all have some form of wanting to be the center of attention.
By pitting ourselves against others or against the odds, we create something unique. Our children, our lack thereof, are shown in this house. Children are one of the most unique creations in life. Our propensity to gamble, or not, shows up in our confidence we can beat the odds. And we re-experience the wonder of being that special snowflake when we see the admiration in our lover’s eyes. Hobbies are an extension of those activities which make us feel special and differentiate us from others.
This house is all about seeing what kind of expansion we can create in our lives. It is the house of Leo and the Sun which represent the will to be. Life is exciting in this house, it’s about exploration. Our limits are seemingly boundless. After all, all the planets revolve around the Sun. What we create around ourselves is shown in this house.
We have retreated to the fourth house to process the outside world, gone back out to explore our expanding possibilities and then come to the sixth house. This house is ruled by Virgo and Mercury. This house shows our co-workers, employees, our relationships with those who serve us, how we serve others, our pets and our work.
This is where our expansion of who we are meets reality. It asks how do we provide for our children. What work can we do to support our visions of who we are. It is 90 degrees away from our third house, and the challenges we experienced with our siblings and peers are repeated with co-workers and employees. It shows our relationship with our plumber and how we treat them. How do we treat others in our lives that we serve?
It is where we decide what are priorities are. We may be in a whirlwind romance (fifth house), but we still have to pay the bills and brush our teeth. This house, more than any other, shows the connection between body, mind and feelings. Are we sick because we hate our job or feel unfilled in our work? Do we eat right, go to the doctor and get enough sleep?
Saturn in this house can show someone who reaches the goals they set for themselves by putting one step in front of the other and who gets the job done no matter the obstacles. Mercury in this house can talk a lot, but find it hard to get things done. How we take care of ourselves and others is shown in this house. Pets fall into this category of serving us and our serving them. The comfort people find in caring for their pets is undeniable. No one can deny the love and companionship our pets provide us and these contribute immeasurably to our health and well-being.
Next week, a discussion of the next three houses of the chart.
Happy Halloween, everyone!
