Everyone loves a love story. I'm an absolute goof for one....I've been blest to live one or two over the course of my life.
It's always sweet to be around at the beginning of one, and although I came into this particular love story a little later....it warmed my heart and put a smile on my face.
I promise not to get too mushy (within reason, of course) so hop the celebratory orange napkin ring and I'll tell the tale of love in a time of flood.
Last Saturday, I was glued to the news. Here in Charleston, we were in the middle of an historic weather event. What was touted to be a ''once in a lifetime rain event'' became a 100 Year Flood. Then it became a 200 Year Flood. The last time I checked, before starting to write this, it had been upped to a 500 Year Flood, the guy next door was building something in his driveway, and the squirrels were fussing over who was first in line as the animals grouped in pairs. We now know that it was a Thousand Year Flood. And it isn't over, yet.
On Saturday, though,I was concerned, but not worried. Still....it helps to watch the news, just in case. In the midst of all the ''how much rain has fallen'' and ''how much rain is still to come,'' was a brief story about a young couple from Kansas who had come to Charleston to be married. Britney Mysinger and Jason Houdek were simply adorable, as only those who are young and in love can be. It was heartbreaking, in a way, that all their plans and efforts had come to naught because Mother Nature....like The Almighty....had made other plans.
The trip to the altar began in earnest when the bride and groom arrived in Charleston a week ago. Little did they know what an adventure awaited them! All was going well until that pesky storm front showed up on our doorstep.
It rained. And it rained. And it rained some more.
By Saturday morning, photographers, make-up artists, and the officiant all had to back out because police had shut down access to the peninsula. The groomsmen were stuck on the Isle of Palms. Even the marriage license was outside the peninsula.
The couple and their bridesmaids were at the hotel, wondering what on earth would happen.
I saw them on a news clip on Saturday morning. With all of Charleston shut down, and most of the surrounding communities on "hold" for the duration, I wasn't the only one who saw that clip on the news.
You should really read the linked news story and watch the video....just for the happy smiles, if not for the details of how people in my adopted city stepped up to make a little magic for this lovely couple.
From the news crew who filmed their story, to the student of photography who photographed the wedding, to City Councilman Mike Seekings, who was touring parts of the city and happened to see their story and who performed the ceremony....everyone involved knew they were part of something very special. It shows on their faces in the pictures...
Days later, still looking at the soggy mess around here....I am warmed and happy by the story of a young couple from Kansas who came to Charleston and managed to get married in spite of a Thousand Year Flood....all because we believe in Love.
Believing, as I do, in certain mysteries of the Universe, a legend crossed my mind that rain on a wedding day is good luck. If that is the case, Mr. and Mrs. Houdek are in for a wonderful life together. So mote it be.
You can read the story of Mr. and Mrs. Houdek here.

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
