One of the really special things about Donald Trump is that he doesn’t just blurt out outrageous ideas like forcing American Muslims to register and carry special ID and then back down. No, he sticks with them. A database tracking Muslims? “I would certainly implement that. Absolutely.” It’s an idea so outrageous that Trump is being directly asked about its similarity to the policies of Hitler’s Nazi Germany.
Trump was repeatedly asked to explain how his idea was different. Four times, he responded: “You tell me.”
The point, Donald, is that we’re struggling to figure out how it’s different. We’re wondering how you would distinguish your policies from those of ADOLF HITLER. It seems like the kind of thing you’d want to help out with, not throw back as a challenge to the people asking it. Trump at least has the sense not to say “there’s no difference, because Hitler was onto something,” but by refusing to answer, he’s kind of conceding the point.
This … is hard to say much about, because wow. This is where American politics is today? Really? And Republican voters aren’t starting to feel a sense of shame about it?
