Margaret (Higgins) Sanger (1879-1966) was the founder of the American Birth Control League, which organization was precursor to Planned Parenthood.
Margaret’s mother, Anne (Purcell) Higgins, was born in Ireland. Anne was brought to America as a girl. The family were refugees from the Great Potato Famine. Over the course of 22 years, Anne had 18 pregnancies with 11 live births. She died at 49.
