After a day of deliberations, the Jury informed the judge today that they were deadlocked he encouraged them back into the deliberation room.
Without speculating on what the jury is likely to do, I have a few questions. First, how many jurors are required to deadlock a jury? Can 1 juror do this? What will happen if the deadlocked jurors refuse to change their minds? I'm assuming a new jury will be empaneled? And finally, the article mentions the "Allen Charge”. Anyone have an idea what this is and how it works?
"Williams ordered the jury to keep trying to reach a verdict. It was not immediately clear how the panel was deadlocked."
"Jaros (Law professor at U of Baltimore) added that if the jury remained deadlocked, Williams could issue a so-called Allen charge, pushing them to reach a verdict"
