I hang out in a few other websites that have a considerably younger audience than Dkos. Namely, Tumblr. Most of the folks I follow and who follow me are half my age — anywhere from high schoolers just beginning to discover the power of their voices with social media, to disillusioned 20 somethings struggling with school and debt. (There are older people on Tumblr, of course, but for some reason I never got involved in their circles. I’m mostly there for the video games and cartoons.)
I noticed a trend in the last month. All during the fall, the only political posts I saw coming across my dashboard were all pro-Bernie. All good, positive posts, encouraging their peers to become more politically aware. I haven’t seen any of those in the last few weeks.
What I’m getting instead these days is a steady stream of Millennials freaking out about Donald Trump. They are utterly appalled and terrified of him and what he represents.
If Trump ends up being the Republican nominee, I suspect just as many Millennials will turn out to vote against him, as they would turn out to vote for Bernie Sanders (should he also win the nomination.)
Right now this is just an anecdote, but I’m going to keep a tally on the pro-Dem posts vs the anti-Republican posts that flow across my Tumblr dashboard. So far the score is 0-2 for today.
