There are a myriad of negative, horrific stories out there. Radical extremists make up the majority of the Republican party’s presidential candidates. Hillary and Bernie supporters are at each other throats. The media is fricking controlled by people worse than Dr. Evil. Hate and bigotry seem to rule the land.
However, that said, there are people out there doing good things, very good things. And teo of those people are Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his comedic personas, such a Borat and Ali G, and his spouse, actress Isla Fisher, who just contributed One Million Dollars (or £670,000 if you prefer) to help Syrian refugees. You know, those people, the same ones that have been demonized by the media and Republicans and Hate Talk radio as godforsaken soulless terrorists.
Except that they aren’t any of those things. They are real people like you or I, except for the misfortune of where they happen to live, a war zone and a killing ground. Untold numbers of them are suffering from famine, war, disease and neglect. An estimated quarter million of them have died since the war against the Assad regime began in 2011 and millions more have been made homeless. They are the true victims of terror, both from their own government, from the Islamic State and the other groups fighting in the region and from the “Coalition” led by America that are bombing and killing many of them with little discrimination.
Worse still has been the reaction to their plight by many in the developed world, both in Europe and in the United States. So when two famous people donate a large amount of his money to helping the people of Syria, and use their celebrity to champion their cause, it’s a big deal.
… Sacha Baron Cohen and his Australian wife, Hollywood actress Isla Fisher, have donated £670,000 ($1m) to two charities.
The couple have given £335,000 to Save The Children to help vaccinate against measles in northern Syria.
They are giving the same amount to the International Rescue Committee, run by ex-UK foreign secretary David Miliband.
This will fund education, health care, shelter and sanitation for refugees in Syria and neighbouring countries.
Thank you Sacha and Isla. You made my day.
