Come oh come ye tea-thirsty restless ones -- the kettle boils, bubbles and sings, musically. ~ Rabindranath Tagore
Good evening, Kibitzers! Today is Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday"). On the Christian calendar, tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, during which ritual fasting or other sacrifice is traditionally observed, so "fat" Tuesday refers to rich foods being enjoyed for the last time before the fast begins.
New Orleans has famously made Mardi Gras into a much bigger celebration than just too many buttery pancakes. There's food and adult beverages, parades and costumes, bead-throwing and assorted debauchery. And music. I've visited New Orleans only once, in the fall, and found that there was good music everywhere all the time, so I am sure that there's at least twice as much during Mardi Gras.
I've put a few tracks below the orange beads. I know you'll have favorites to add in the thread, in any of the many styles associated with New Orleans (or any other style, as you like!)
(At ~1:55, Queen Ida briefly discusses the origin of Zydeco.)

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate. Readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
