illegal booty confiscated in 2014 by DHS
(2014) Peregrine Honig says she just wanted to help celebrate the hometown team when she designed Lucky Royals boyshorts. The panties, with “Take the Crown” and “KC” across the bottom, were set to be sold in Honig’s Birdies Panties shop. But Homeland Security agents visited the Crossroads store and confiscated the few dozen pairs of underwear, printed in Kansas City by Lindquist Press. “They came in and there were two guys” Honig said. “I asked one of them what size he needed and he showed me a badge and took me outside. They told me they were from Homeland Security and we were violating copyright laws.” She thought that since the underwear featured her hand-drawn design that she was safe. But the officers explained that by connecting the “K” and the “C,” she infringed on major league baseball copyright. (The officials involved could not be immediately reached for comment.) They placed the underwear in an official Homeland Security bag and had Honig sign a statement saying she wouldn’t use the logo
On an issue shared on many different fronts, the rise of the DHS as a massive security theater bureaucracy has come to its paradoxical denouement as
the GOP tries to hold immigration policy hostage and loses in the Senate under the pretext of trying to create a "clean" bill. But how clean can any bill be when abuses of power and funding are rampant whether the clearly unnecessary militarization of ostensibly rural police forces or the confiscation of copyright violation panties.
Has the time come to reexamine a bloated DHS budget that has expanded from 20 to 60 billion dollars since its creation and perhaps dissolve a bureaucracy that stemmed from the inability of the FBI to talk to the CIA near 9/11. Needless to say, the MIC has come up with its R&D vigorish as we now deal with
domestic drone policies that have no possible regulatory solution in a free market democracy. As with all federal agencies, dissolving such an agency could have come from its defunding, but like Milton in the film Office Space, we will have to see what would come from how many regional police departments getting more fully automatic
