Surgeon General Vivek Murthy went on
CBS This Morning today in order to talk about the need for parents to vaccinate their children. Murthy, along with many in the science community and in our current administration, are hitting the airwaves in the hopes of getting people to stop being afraid of vaccinations. The hard-hitting triumvirate of Charlie Rose, Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell were excited to get the scoop on the Surgeon General's first television interview (since taking office) and let him speak his mind on the boring subject of saving kids from childhood diseases. But as the time began to run out on the CBS news crew, they had to bring up something a little more
salacious important:
O'Donnell: Mr. Surgeon General, while we have you hear I want to get you on the record on whether you support the legalization of marijuana–and what concerns do you have?
Murthy handled it well and began by explaining that early experiments were being done in many states and–
O'Donnell: –we know all of that, we want to know your position Mr. Surgeon General, with all due respect.
It was all, as is standard these days, overly theatric on the part of the
egotist interviewer. After saying that his position is based on what the science tells us, he went on to say that preliminary experiments have yielded positive results for:
Murthy: ... certain medical conditions, and symptoms, that (sic) marijuana can be helpful. So I think that we have to use that data to drive policy making.
That's positive news in, at the very least, bringing the classification of marijuana down on the federal level.
