It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 "Wasp" radial of 500 hp. which drove it to a max speed of 234 mph. The machine gun tubes can be seen below the propeller blades at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions of the center engine fairing. It was armed with either two .30 cal. or 1 .50 cal. and 1 .30 cal. machine guns
The P-26 was the first all-metal monoplane fighter accepted for service with the Army Air Corps, and also the last to have an open cockpit, fixed landing gear, and wire bracing.
The P-26 was the Air Corps frontline fighter from 1932 till 1938 when it was replaced by the Seversky P-35 and Curtiss P-36.
