A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a diary for Top Comments about the National Organization for Marriage and their sad, pathetic recent history of fabricating photos of their anti-gay rallies. Twice, NOM used photos of Obama rallies (once without even cropping Obama himself out of the picture), and recently, they very poorly photoshopped an image to show an enormous crowd in front of the Supreme Court. The reality, of course, is that it's not very difficult at all to fit everybody in the frame at a NOM rally, because turnout is pitiful and seemingly getting worse.
Well, as you may know, Alabama (the state I heard many claim would be "the last to fall") is going to have marriage equality starting on Monday. That is, assuming the Supreme Court does not issue a stay, and there is no reason to believe they will. And thanks to Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore (who is facing ethics complaints from the SPLC), it appears that a handful of probate judges are planning to defy the law and refuse to comply with the ruling. So things may not go smoothly. But make no mistake: Marriage equality will be the law of the land, whether or not Moore and his hateful band of bigots recognizes it.
In the meantime, as librarisingnsf notes in the diary I linked above, an anti-gay group called Sanctity of Marriage held a rally on the steps of the State Capitol in Montgomery today. He updated his diary with pictures of the rally, but since the diary was already off the rec list, I thought it wouldn't hurt to share them again here. Spoiler alert: It was pretty much a bust. As expected. But that didn't stop Sanctity of Marriage from claiming on Twitter that they had a "great crowd." But hey, at least they didn't fabricate the photos, I guess.
I think I saw more people than that in Kroger this morning.
Don't you feel sorry for them? No? Yeah, me neither. Betty Bowers had the perfect Twitter response to Sanctity of Marriage and their bizarre boasting:
There were also counter-protesters holding signs reading (I love this) "Y'all Means All."
Even better, the counter-protesters sang a modified version of "Chapel of Love" to the haters to inform them that, like it or not, they're goooing to the courthouse and they're gooonna get married. I bet they were just seething. Click
here to see video of the singing.
Alabama may be headed for a constitutional crisis, but in the end, we'll win. When it comes to marriage, y'all will soon mean all in Alabama.
