New Cases to Watch
Martese Johnson, black male, Charlottesville, Virginia (March 18, 2015)
The first case this week did not result in a death, but I am tracking it for its potential political impact. Martese Johnson was denied entry to a bar because his license was expired, and somehow ended up bloody, beaten by Virginia Alcohol and Beverage Control Officers, and the photos of the incident went viral. An honor student at UVa, the campus and others in the community have rallied around the ongoing issues of race and police brutality.
Tony Robinson, black male, Madison, Wisconsin (March 6, 2015)
Tony Robinson was shot and killed as police responded to calls from his family members/friends that he was acting erratically. He had been taking hallucinogenic mushrooms and was unarmed. Massive protests took place in Madison soon thereafter.
Naeschylus Vinzant, black male, 37, Aurora, Colorado (3/6/15)
Mr. Vinzant was unarmed, approached by police on the sidewalk as a suspect in a robbery, and shot once in the chest.
Bobby Gross, black male, 35, Washington, DC (3/12/15)
Mr. Gross had on no pants and no shoes, was in a subway tunnel, and swinging a large tree branch of some sort. When he approached an officer swinging the branch, he was shot and killed.
