" . . . should a photographer be punished for refusing to do a wedding that their faith teaches them is not one that is valid in the eyes of God?" -- Senator Marco Rubio.
Not to pick on the good Senator, because he's hardly alone and not even the most vociferous spokesperson of this idea (at least, he's asking here rather than declaring), but why is this even a thing?
Why when it's a wedding does everyone get stupid and forget that the non-clergy-related services being provided (photography, catering, cakes, florists, etc.) are COMMERCE NOT RELIGION. (Sorry for shouting, but that idea seems impossible for some people to grasp.)
They're being paid to shoot a video, not to bless the marriage.
Do photographers, when they shoot, say, corporate events, agree with everything the company they are doing the photography for does? Um, probably not.
This is no different. When I got married, I didn't care if the caterer thought that since my husband was raised Presbyterian and I was raised Catholic that we should be married in a church by clergy rather than at an inn by a judge. I just wanted good quality food and enough to feed our guests. I wasn't looking for her moral approval of either my wedding or my marriage. And why would anyone who got cash money from us think we would pine for their moral judgement of our relationship? What arrogance!
These people aren't religious, they're narcissists.
