Below is a briefing list of text, audio and video sources to help you learn very much very quickly about TPP and why Fast Track must not happen. It is sorted by most recent on top and oldest on bottom. The famous WikiLeaks chapters are toward the bottom. Why does President Obama want these incredibly bad rules under which to grind the people of the United States?
April 15, outstanding D Kos diary by Tasini is here.
April 14, excellent D Kos diary by buildingbridgesradio contains links to Nobel Prize Economist Joseph Stiglitz on the Dangers of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The Stiglitz statement ends at 22:05 and is followed by a brief explanation of the connections between drug trafficking, the recent Mexican massacres and the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement).
April 10, 50 Reasons We Cannot Afford the TPP See the state-by-state guide to specific outcomes of the status quo North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) “trade” pact model that the TPP would expand (interactive site) ~~Get the latest government data on: how many jobs have been lost in your state to unfair trade, how much inequality has risen, how many family farms have disappeared, and how large your state’s trade deficit with North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) “trade” pact model countries has grown.
April 1, Sean Flynn, Associate Director of the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property at Washington College of Law, discusses the leaked draft of TPP on a show from WORT 89.9FM Madison.
March 30, Tom Godfrey from CHOICE interview on Juice 107.3 Gold Coast, Australia talking about TPP.
March 24, Talk Nation Radio: Margaret Flowers on Stopping the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
March 23, Sam Castro from Whistleblowers, Activists & Citizens Alliance speaks about the potential impact of the Trans Pacific Partnership; unraveling the problem with Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) provisions, the effect the TPP may have on grassroots campaigns, the environment and the concerns about the highly secretive and undemocratic process surrounding TPP negotiations.
March 15, Deborah Burger, RN & Co-President of National Nurses United discusses “fast track" of the TPP, a massive trade deal between the U.S. and 11 other countries.
March 12, In These Times published [Nobel Economics Laureate] Joseph Stiglitz on the Trans Pacific Partnership: “This Is a Big Deal” about a March 2nd community organizing meeting held by Working Families Party of New York at P.S. 69 in Jackson Heights, a diverse, largely immigrant section of New York City, to pressure local U.S. Rep. Thomas Crowley of 14th-NY (Bronx & Queens), a Democrat on Ways and Means committee, who has been evasive about which way he will vote on the issue. Also noted is WFP's demands on Oregon's U.S. Senator Ron Wyden who is not helping in the fight against either fast track or TPP. In the "Call to Action" item above, the Tweet at Congress Leaders to Oppose Fast Track for TPP action specifically calls out Sen. Ron Wyden as well as leaders Rep. Nacy Pelosi and Rep. Steny Hoyer.
March 2 (the day of the Jackson Heights P.S. 69 community meeting) Cajun Tomato published (in NYC 100, a periodic series chronicling experiences and observations as a New Yorker) one of the Observations of a Cajun living in NYC: "My R-Rated Takeaways from Nobel Economist Stiglitz's TPP Speech". Cajun Tomato has written a truly superior piece in which is said,
"Stiglitz’s half-hour speech provided the backbone for the night’s meeting, urging New York’s congressional representatives to stand against the partnership. Union, environmental and ethnic leaders followed him with pleas directed toward Rep. Joe Crowley..."
February 26, Senior Massachusetts
Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke 8-minutes on ISDS (Investor-State Dispute Settlement) provision in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement as a Senate Floor Speech in a lengthy "Speak-Out" session about trade policies that Senator Sharrod Brown (OH) organized. Her speech came right after a segment of colloquy which
is on C-SPAN starting at 2:29:45 here between Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (RI) and Brown running from 2:55:58 to 3:02:20. Sen. Warren yielded the floor at 03:10:22 and then Senator Edward “Ed” Markey (MA) schooled the other Senators with his scientifically valid speech on how a warming climate can cause huge snow storms that result in the 9-foot snow pack covering Boston as we saw it this past winter. Markey spoke until 3:19:20 against both TATIP (Trans-Atlantic Trade & Investment Partnership centered on Europe) and TPP (focus on Asia with all the Pacific Rim). Markey explained that TATIP and TPP are not the old-time deals only about tariffs and access to markets but instead they are vast, binding rules on labor rights, energy, environment, medicine pricing, patents, internet freedom, and innovation. Markey demanded protections of Labor Rights, Environment, No Export of Crude Oil, Elimination of Harmful Fishery Subsidies and Fishing Practices, No ISDS Provisions that Undercut U.S. Sovereignty and Courts. Senator Bernie Sanders (VT) spoke next from 3:19:26 to 3:28:35
